In a little over two months, audiences will go back to class thanks to the release of the upcoming Harry Potter series. The upcoming Wizarding World production will attempt to capture the magic from the books by including events, sequences, and characters that didn't make it into the original movie adaptations. HBO has the massive undertaking of bringing Hogwarts to life in a new light, and to do so, a little real-life VFX wizardry is required.
The Harry Potter movies grossed a combined total of $7.7 billion at the box office, and that amount rises to $9.5 billion if we include the Fantastic Beasts films. Thanks to the saga's successful track record, Warner Bros. was willing to invest more in the creation of its TV series. However, the budget may have been a little more expensive than anyone could've imagined.

The budget for the Harry Potter series reached nearly $200 million million halfway through production
According to a report by The Times, production costs for the upcoming Harry Potter series reached £147.4 million, or nearly $200 million, by the end of 2025. However, filming continued until May 2026, which means the show's final budget is expected to surpass that of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which is the most expensive Wizarding World film ever made at $250 million.
For reference, here are the eight most expensive Wizarding World projects and how much each one cost to make:
- Harry Potter series - over $250 million (projected)
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - $250 million
- Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore - $200 million
- Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - $200 million
- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - $180 million
- Harry Potter And The Order of the Phoenix - $150 million
- Harry Potter And The Goblet of Fire - $150 million
- Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban - $130 million
While it may be shocking to learn that the Harry Potter series costs more than the combined budgets of The Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2, it's also easy to see why. The longest Harry Potter movie is The Chamber of Secrets, at 2 hours and 41 minutes. In contrast, many reports have claimed that the HBO show will have a total runtime of eight hours across its eight episodes. However, Johnny Flynn, who plays Lucius Malfoy in the series, stated that the final runtime will be closer to ten hours.
If the Harry Potter series had a total budget of $250 million across eight episodes, it means every episode would cost, on average, $31.25 million to make. This would make it one of the most expensive HBO productions ever. To put this figure into perspective, every episode of the first season of House of the Dragon cost a little under $20 million to make. Additionally, the average cost per episode in The Last of Us was over $10 million, and The Pacific, which is one of the most expensive HBO productions ever, had an average episode cost of $21.7 million.
Perhaps one of the reasons HBO has cast doubt on the "10-year plan" to release all seasons of Harry Potter is due to the large investment needed to bring the show to life. Waiting to see how many viewers tune in to Harry's adventures before landing on the budgets for subsequent seasons may be the way to go. On the bright side, the opening chapter of this magical tale is nearly here, and it won't be long before we discover whether such a large investment was worth it.
Harry Potter season 1 will be released on Dec. 25, 2026.
