Silo season 3 delivered some of the most phenomenal hours of television across its 10 episodes. In the Before Times storyline following how the silos came to be through the eyes of journalist Helen Drew and congressman Daniel Keene, Jessica Henwick and Ashley Zukerman turned in two of the standout performances of the whole series.
But the season's penultimate episode left Helen's fate wide open as she was separated from Daniel in the immediate aftermath of a nuclear explosion, apparently pulled into Silo 18 while Daniel was dragged into Silo 1.
The season 4 teaser has already hinted that we will see more of Helen's life inside Silo 18, showing glimpses of her in those first desperate days underground. And according to both the show's creator and Henwick herself, what is coming for Helen in the final season is unlike anything the show has attempted before.
Henwick has spoken about signing on for the final season on In The Envelope: The Actor's Podcast, and what she said gives a real sense of the scale of what is coming. Part of what drew her to seeing it through was the show's commitment to actually ending.
"I signed on for...the appeal of having a finite story and knowing it's going to end in four, it was closed," she said. "I really respect shows which do that. But I signed on for my final episode in season four."
That final episode, by her account, is where everything was always heading. She described it as the most demanding work of her career, saying: "All of that for me was just build up to that episode. It's the most I have ever been challenged, the furthest I've pushed myself as an actor."
She was open about the fact that nerves have become rare for her, but season 4 broke that pattern. She told the podcast that in the past year there were only two moments that really got to her.
"And what makes me so happy is that in the past year, I've been nervous twice. Once is on Roots Manoeuvre, going to set and going, I have to sing and perform in front of a crowd today. I've never done that. Or I've not done that since I was a kid in extracurricular drama class. And the other time was going to Silo season four," she said.
"I genuinely wasn't sure if I was going to be able to do it. And what I realized was I had no choice. And so therefore, I did it. Like the sort of inevitability of it really worked," Henwick explained.
She was careful not to give too much away, but what she did share suggests the material took her somewhere deeply personal. "I got to explore emotions that I'd never, I'd never seen," she said. "I got to ask myself questions in my personal life that I have probably avoided asking myself. It was confronting."
Helen and Daniel's separation has a huge impact on Silo season 4
Showrunner Graham Yost was deliberate about making Helen the emotional centre of the season 3 finale's closing moments, and he has been equally deliberate about what comes next.
Speaking to Radio Times, Yost made clear that the separation is not something the show is leaving behind. "There is a lot of cruelty at the heart of this thing," he said. "Seeing Daniel and Helen being separated during a nuclear explosion… We pay that off in season 4. You will find out what happened to Helen."
That promise sounds even more ominous given what the season finale, "Troy," has shown us about Daniel's side of the story, centuries later. Yost has said the decision to end on Helen was no accident. "We wanted the audience to lean in with the very last shot of season three, which is about her," he said.
With Yost promising answers and Henwick describing the experience in terms this raw and this personal, it sounds like the answer is going to be one of the most affecting things the show has done. Silo season 4 premieres July 9, 2027, on Apple TV+.
