For many movie fans, the release and subsequent success of James Gunn’s Superman was a bit of a bittersweet moment. On the one hand, Gunn delivered the kind of hopeful, optimistic, and joyful Superman project that fans had been clamoring for for decades. On the other hand, it marked the official end of actor Henry Cavill’s tenure as the titular Man of Steel.

Despite the fact that the films Cavill was featured in were viewed as highly divisive by critics and general audiences alike, the man himself was a promising actor who never quite got the right chance to shine in the role.

Fortunately, Cavill fans need not despair too much, as in a recent interview, the actor revealed that he’s had a promising summer of his own, working on Chad Stahelski’s Highlander reboot.

Highlander is a long-running action-fantasy film franchise. Although the franchise has had a less-than-stellar reputation over the years, with several lesser sequels produced over the years—with some even going straight to home release—the new film promises to give the concept at the core of the series the kind of A-list treatment it has always deserved. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the creative partnership between Stahelski and Cavill.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill seemed excited to share what he's working on this summer: “Highlander! That is taking all of my focus. I’m extremely excited about it. This character is going to be a lot of fun to play, and I’m loving working with Chad Stahelski. He is a very talented man.”

This update is certainly exciting for fans, who had grown concerned about the project, which was announced back in 2021. As we previously reported, filming was delayed multiple times, and it was believed the movie even switched studios. If Cavill has recently been busy with the reboot, however, there's no doubt we'll get more updates soon.

Cavill is no stranger to action sequences, hand-to-hand combat, or swordplay. Outside of playing the big blue boy scout, the actor has also taken on roles in projects such as The Witcher, Enola Holmes, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and Mission: Impossible – Fallout over the past several years. Each of these roles saw the extremely fit performer showcasing his physicality and prowess, and Highlander seems set to double down on all of that with Stahelski at the helm.

The director was a stuntman himself for many years before making the transition to directing with the John Wick franchise. Since the first film’s release in 2014, Stahelski has helmed each subsequent entry and made a name for himself as an innovator in the field of modern action cinema.

Like Highlander before it, each new John Wick sequel deepens the mythology of the franchise, but where the former faltered in these efforts, the latter has excelled. This unique combination of tactile, practical action expertise and lore-heavy narrative experience makes Stahelski a perfect fit for Highlander, and both audiences and the actor himself are clearly eager to see how the director will utilize Cavill’s imposing physique.
