Henry Cavill reveals brutal leg injury that delayed Highlander filming plans

Highlander was supposed to start filming this fall, but that's not happening after Henry Cavill's injury.

One week after Deadline reported Henry Cavill had suffered an injury during pre-production on Highlander, Cavill revealed the injury in a new Instagram post, along with a picture of his dog, Baggins.

Cavill shared two pictures in the Instagram post. In the first image, Cavill is kicking back on the couch with Baggins, who appears to be a French Bulldog. In the next picture, we see Cavill's leg propped up on the coffee table. His injured ankle is wrapped in a soft cast.

We don't know the extent of his injuries, and I don't want to speculate, but it looks awfully painful.

According to the report, Cavill suffered a leg injury while training for the film's upcoming fight scenes and action sequences. Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick movies, is directing, so you know it's going to be intense and action-packed. Unfortunately, it's hard to rehearse and train with a bad leg injury. And, that leads to the next bit of bad news.

Highlander filming will be delayed until 2026 following Cavill's injury

As Deadline reported, Highlander was originally planning to start filming in September 2025, but following Cavill's injury, production has been delayed until the beginning of 2026. We don't know what the exact date production will start, but I'm assuming it will hinge on Cavill's recovery and how quickly they'll be able to ramp up on the training. Hopefully, the injury isn't too serious and the rehab process is relatively straightforward and pain-free for Cavill.

We don't know exactly how long Cavill, Stahelski, and the rest of the team were going to be filming Highlander, but they'll need at least several months of filming to wrap. Then, it's going to be an even longer break as we wait for post-production to be completed before the film's release.

Right now, that looks a lot like 2027 at the earliest. There's no way if production begins early next year that it will be ready to be released in theaters. I'd bet on 2027 or 2028 as the release year for Highlander, assuming production begins soon-ish.

It's been a long string of delays for the Highlander reboot. The film, which tells the story of warriors who will battle until the one Highlander remains alive, was supposed to start filming earlier this year, but it was delayed by John Wick's Ballerina, according to Screen Rant.

Along with Cavill, Highlander stars Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, and Djimon Hounsou. We'll share more news about the movie as we learn more.

Henry Cavill was also injured while filming The Witcher

Cavill, as far as we know, does most of his own stunts on projects like Man of Steel, the DC movies, The Witcher, and other projects. Several years ago, Cavill injured his hamstring while filming The Witcher season 2, according to Men's Health.

He shared information about his injury in an Instagram video back in 2021 before the release of The Witcher's second season on Netflix.

According to reports, medics were called in to assist Cavill after that injury. The Sun reported that it was so serious that he needed an ambulance on set.

Look, when you do your own stunts, you run the risk of getting injured. It's a big deal, and it's taxing on these performers, but it's part of the gig for actors like Cavill.

We'll share more updates about Highlander, Warhammer, and Cavill's upcoming projects as we find out more information. Remember, The Witcher season 4 premieres on Netflix on Oct. 30, but it will be the first season without Cavill. Liam Hemsworth has taken over for Cavill as Geralt of Rivia in the final two seasons of the series.
