Henry Cavill's Highlander movie to start shooting in early 2025

Henry Cavill may not be in The Witcher anymore, but you'll still be able to see him slice and dice in a new fantasy drama.

Everyone was surprised when Henry Cavill, one of the internet's most beloved hunks, announced that he was leaving the cast of Netflix's The Witcher, where he played the lead role of Geralt of Rivia. But at least he's making a lateral move: instead of slicing up monsters on the Continent, he'll be slicing up fellow immortals in a remake/reboot/reimagining of Highlander, the 1986 film where immortals travel the world trying to kill each other, since apparently, "there can be only one."

Why can there be only one? Save some mystery for the movie. In any case, Redanian Intellgence — which usually covers Witcher news but will make an exception for a movie where Henry Cavill using a sword — reports that filming will begin in the first quarter of 2025. That goes against what Cavill previously said about shooting starting in July of 2024, but it's not uncommon for schedules to shift.

Cavill has already been training to play the lead role of Connor MacLeod, and promises that folks who have watched him sword-fight on The Witcher are in for a treat. “If you think you’ve seen me do sword work before, you haven’t seen anything yet,” he teased to The Hollywood Reporter. That's pretty big talk considering the sword fights on that show have been quite fun. Consider the bar set.

Highlander will be directed by Chad Stahelski, famous for helming all four John Wick movies. Honestly, that's a better sell for me than Henry Cavill; the John Wick movies are the best action flicks of our times, and I want to see whatever the director puts his mind to next.

Like many modern movies, the new Highlander is being made with an eye towards turning it into a franchise, but that's no reasons we can't enjoy it. It's rumored that Michael Fassbender may play the villain of the piece, but now we're getting into speculation. Look for Highlander to come out sometime in 2026.
