2026 has been an absolutely incredible year for Game of Thrones fans. We started the year with the debut season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which was met with rave reviews. Summer then brought about the absolutely phenomenal third season of House of the Dragon and the launch of the new stage play The Mad King, which marked a new first for the franchise. Then, just this week, the first-ever Game of Thrones movie secured a release date, with Aegon’s Conquest confirmed to be landing in theaters on June 1, 2029.
Needless to say, Game of Thrones fans are having quite an exciting year, so I guess it’s only fitting that the universe had to take a little from us after giving fans so much over the course of the year.
While HBO is skipping this year’s New York Comic Con festivities, Game of Thrones was set to be front and center at one of the event’s most anticipated panels: The Lannisters Send Their Regards. This special panel was set to bring together Lena Headey and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau for a reunion designed to reflect on their time on Game of Thrones playing Cersei and Jaime Lannister.
The panel was highly promoted by ReedPop, the organizer behind NYCC, and was set to take place on the first day of the convention on Thursday, October 8. It would have marked the first time Headey and Coster-Waldau have reunited for a convention appearance in years, making it one of the most-anticipated events of the convention. Sadly, though, the panel has been quietly canceled by NYCC.
The panel’s status was thrust into question when it was announced that Coster-Waldau was unable to attend NYCC due to filming conflicts. NYCC’s official social media accounts broke the news in since-deleted announcements, noting that they were “bummed to announce that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is no longer able to join us at NYCC due to filming conflicts.” At the time, the Lannisters Send Their Regards panel remained on the NYCC schedule, and it looked as though ReedPop was going to proceed with the panel, with fans questioning whether perhaps the show would pivot the event to a spotlight discussion with Headey or potentially by bringing in another guest to join her for the discussion.
Sadly, it seems that Headey has since canceled her planned appearance, and the official NYCC website has scrubbed all mention of the Lannisters Send Their Regards panel.
It’s not entirely surprising that the panel has been canceled given that it was designed to serve as a reunion panel bringing Headey and Coster-Waldau together; however, it’s incredibly disappointing that the panel’s cancellation wasn’t more directly acknowledged by NYCC organizers. In fact, the only discussion of the panel’s cancellation has occurred on Reddit, where fans began discussing the panel status after noticing it was quietly removed from the panel schedule.
Hopefully, the stars might align for the next NYCC and the Lannisters will be able to come together for a proper reunion panel. For now, it seems the Lannisters truly are sending their regards and that it’ll be a Game of Thrones-less NYCC outside of the planned fan meetup.
