House of the Dragon: Aegon Targaryen, "the true king," finally gets his own Funko Pop

Tom Glynn-Carney himself introduces the Aegon Targaryen Funko Pop, which is apparently "one of the most requested Funko Pops ever."

There are plenty of Funko Pop figures based on HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon; a bunch of new ones went up for pre-order just the other week. But one characters has been conspicuously absent: King Aegon II Targaryen, played by Tom Glynn-Carney. Why can't people play with their favorite layabout, out-of-his-depth cripple king?

Now they can! Tom Glynn-Carney himself announced that an Aegon Targaryen figure was now available for pre-order at Funko.com:

"Thank you for making Aegon Targaryen one of the most requested Funko Pops ever," Glynn-Carney says. "That is so cool. Pre-order your Aegon Targaryen, the true king, with Sunfyre, now."

He looks pointedly at the camera when he says "the true king"; on House of the Dragon, Aegon is engaged in a war with his half-sister Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) for the Iron Throne. The title of "true king" is very much up for debate at the moment.

For me, Aegon ran away with the second season of House of the Dragon. He's a callow brat prince who never particularly wanted to sit the Iron Throne or be at war with his sister, but he's pushed into it by his mother and grandfather. As king, he earnestly tries to be a decent ruler, but he's not very good at it; on top of not being very experienced, he's got a bit of a drinking problem. And oh yeah, his young son is brutally murdered at the top of the season.

Despite all of that, he still tries to ride into battle on his dragon Sunfyre, but that ends up going disastrously too. The guy can't catch a break, but I liked watching him strive against the odds. When last we saw Aegon, he was fleeing King's Landing lest his brother Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), who was ruling in Aegon's stead while Aegon recovered from his injuries, kill him and make his stewardship permanent.

Aegon will return to our screens in House of the Dragon season 3, which is due out on HBO and Max sometime in 2026. Until then, his Funko Pop will have to tide us over.
