With the ongoing release of House of the Dragon season 3, it was only a matter of time before we saw another ambitious dragon scene. And now, we just had it with episode 7, during The Battle of Rook’s Rest.
During this intense moment, all four dragons—and their riders—face each other in a standoff between Sheepstealer’s real rider, Rhaena, and Rhaenyra, who discovered that Daemon was, in fact, lying to her about killing his rider. Now, with Addam Velaryon in tow, the Queen and he track down Caraxes and Sheepstealer right to the same field Rhaena is hiding in.
It’s there that Rhaenyra discovers it was Rhaena who was on Sheepstealer, the dragon that was partially responsible for the death of her son, Jacareys. But Sheepstealer does not yield to Rhaena, and because dragons will be dragons, they get into this huge fight where Sheepstealer attacks the others
All four beasts engage, but eventually it ends with Rhaenyra's dragon flying off with Rhaena in tow, while Caraxes (with Daemon on top) is left to finish the job and kill Sheepstealer. However, we see that he doesn’t exactly kill him — rather, he injures Sheepstealer so badly he cannot fly, and he wobbles off, whimpering.
To be honest, there were so many things we wanted to see with the last two episodes of season 3, but dragons fighting like this, against each other instead of their riders fully commanding them, was fantastic. But this scene really goes to show that at the end of the day, dragons are just like animals, and when they feel threatened, they will attack, regardless of their rider.
And quite honestly, I got very teary-eyed. Do I know Sheepstealer is potentially a very dangerous dragon who is volatile and will most likely burn someone just for stepping into his field of vision? Yes, I do. But watching him get burnt and bitten and seriously hurt to the point where he couldn’t even fly was like an arrow to the chest (sorry, Jace). Regardless, the scene is expertly done and really answers a lot of fans' complaints about there being fewer dragon fights than expected.
We haven’t really seen this type of active dragon work since the Battle of Rook’s Rest in the season 2 episode, “The Red Dragon and the Gold.” That episode had probably the most major dragon fights, including the demise of Princess Rhaenys and her dragon, Meleys, and the supposed demise of Prince Aegon’s dragon, Sunfyre.
But even though we saw this absolute beauty of a dragon fight in episode 7, there is still one question that needs to be answered—where is Vhagar, the largest dragon in the realm? And when will Aemond reunite with him? I need this answered soon because I need to see more epic dragon battles like this one!
Either way, the finale is fast approaching. All I’m thinking about is how I can’t wait to see who dies next after the (underwhelming) death of Criston Cole. Will the Battle of Tumbleton finally happen? I, for one, can’t wait to see what goes down in the finale!
