It feels like House of the Dragon seaosn 3 only just began, and yet somehow we’re near the end of the season and are facing yet another long hiatus. Following episode 7’s release on August 2, there is sadly just one more episode left in the season. That’s right, our watch is about to end… at least for now.
For the second season in a row, House of the Dragon is producing an eight-episode season which means episode 8 will serve as the final episode for the season. The good news is that this time the plan was always for the season to be eight episodes, rather than HBO changing course late in the game, which we saw in season 2 when the episode count was cut from ten to eight.
There is no telling what the final episode of the season might bring or how long the season 3 finale will be, but one thing that is certain is that we’re in store for a bigger finale than last year.
Due to the episode count reduction, House of the Dragon season 2 ended on a low note with a finale that felt more like a penultimate episode than an actual season finale. This was due in large part to the Battle of the Gullet being cut from season 2 and saved for the season 3 premiere. While season 2 suffered from the decision, season 3 has reaped the reward, with the third season being praised as one of the show’s best yet.
We started off the season strong with the Battle of the Gullet, and the momentum has never slowed since. We’ve seen several incredible and unforgettable moments throughout the season, including shocking deaths, unexpected blindsides, and plenty of memeable moments that have taken social media by storm (I’m awash in dilemmas and deficiencies, anyone?).
There is no telling what the writers have planned in episode 8, but if the season ends with the first Battle of Tumbleton, then we’re certainly in for a treat. Don’t worry, you won’t find spoilers here that would ruin the moment for those who aren’t familiar with the source material, but let’s just say the first Battle of Tumbleton would certainly leave fans speechless if adapted successfully.
Regardless of how season 3 ends with the finale on August 9, the one thing we know for sure is there’s still a lot of story left to tell. Thankfully, HBO is giving Ryan Condal and the show’s creative team the chance to land the plane, or should we say, dragon.
House of the Dragon season 3 is not the final season: Season 4 is happening!
While House of the Dragon season 3, episode 8, is the final episode in the show’s latest chapter, there is still one more season planned to bring the show to an actual conclusion. House of the Dragon season 4 is not only in the works, but it has also been confirmed by Ryan Condal to be the final season for the show.
"I can't speak for everybody else involved with the show and HBO and all that, but, yes, that is very much my plan," Condal noted of his plan to end the series with season 4 ahead of season 3’s premiere earlier this year.
Given where we’re at in the source material, it does make sense to end the show with season 4. There isn’t too much story still to tell, and the fourth season is sure to be one that certainly is not for the faint of heart. The final season of the show will bring about some of the most epic moments from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, including the downfall of several of the show’s biggest characters.
Condal and the team have been working on the scripts for the show since January, and filming is expected to begin in early 2027. Barring any setbacks, the final season of House of the Dragon should arrive on HBO sometime in 2028. Yes, 2028.
While we’d love to see House of the Dragon season 4 arrive in 2027, we’ve grown accustomed to a two-year gap between seasons of the show and understand that the scope of the show requires a longer production schedule. The good news is that while we might have to wait until 2028 for House of the Dragon season 4, we’ll get to enjoy the second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in 2027, which will help to bridge the gap and give fans new episodes from the Game of Thrones universe.
