The ravens are flying overtime in Westeros right now. Last week at New York Comic Con, we got treated to the first trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and a panel with its creators and stars that gave all sorts of insights into HBO's next Game of Thrones prequel. We also got a release date for the show: January 18, 2026. And now, it seems there may be good news for the franchise's other prequel series, House of the Dragon.
According to a report from fan site Redanian Intelligence, the third season of House of the Dragon wrapped filming over the weekend. That means major battles, heartbreaking character deaths, and dramatic political reversals are all in the can for the new season. Now begins the long process of post-production, where the show's spectacular dragons and other effects are added into the mix.
As good as this news is, I have to give the usual disclaimer that this is not an official announcement from HBO or the cast and crew, so it should be taken with a grain of salt. That said, Redanian Intelligence has a pretty good track record with this sort of stuff, so I'm inclined to think it's probably accurate. It does line up with the timeline we heard earlier this year from a Hollywood Reporter interview with Alicent Hightower actor Olivia Cooke, which confirmed season 3 was expected to wrap in "mid-October."

What to expect in House of the Dragon season 3
With filming coming to a close on House of the Dragon season 3, we can look ahead to the future with some major excitement. HBO CEO Casey Bloys has confirmed that House of the Dragon season 3 is slated to premiere in summer 2026, meaning that next year will be the first time that two Game of Thrones shows air in the same year. It's going to be a doozy!
House of the Dragon's third season stands to be a particularly important moment for the show. Season 2 had some major ups and downs, with some incredible episodes like "The Red Dragon and the Gold" as well as letdowns like the tepid season finale, "The Queen Who Ever Was." Add in a public feud with creator George R.R. Martin that happened shortly after the second season was done airing, and you have a recipe for fans paying extra close attention to see how season 3 goes over.
Fortunately, House of the Dragon has a lot going for it in its upcoming season. Showrunner Ryan Condal teased that this season will adapt four major events from Martin's book, Fire & Blood. We know that one of those is the Battle of the Gullet, the most brutal naval battle in Westeros' history, when dragons and fleets clashed in the sea near King's Landing. The Gullet was originally planned as the finale for season 2, but was pushed back when HBO decided to shorten the season from 10 episodes to eight.
We're also expecting a few dramatic deaths of longtime characters this season. Suffice to say, House of the Dragon could really knock it out of the park — so long as it doesn't stray too wildly from Martin's source material.
We'll have our ear to the ground for more updates about House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. For now, make ready to spend 2026 in Westeros!
