It looks like we have the runtime for the season 3 premiere of House of the Dragon, and it’s a long one!
Fans of Game of Thrones and its various spinoffs know there’s no such thing as a set episode length. While most HBO dramas are roughly 50 minutes, Game of Throne and House of the Dragon often have episodes running over an hour in length. The season finales can be almost feature-length. For the record, the longest Thrones episode is “The Long Night” at 82 minutes, while House of the Dragon’s longest is the season 2 finale, “The Queen Who Ever Was” at 73 minutes.
Now, per HBO’s own official schedule, the season 3 premiere of House of the Dragon on June 21 will also clock in at 73 minutes. It’s not certain yet how long subsequent episodes will be, as most seem to average about an hour, with the possibility that the season 3 finale could once again be close to 75 minutes. Presumably, this doesn't count a season recap or the typical previews and brief "inside the episode" featurette HBO airs afterward.

A big premiere should be no surprise, as season 3 is expected to kick off with the Battle of the Gullet. This episode's sea conflict showcases an incredible naval battle that’s a key moment in the Dance of the Dragons civil war, and a central part of the conflict that created the Westeros GOT fans will know by the time of the main show.
The producers have been hyping this up as the biggest battle sequence in the entire franchise’s history. That makes it logical that they need as much time as possible to kick the season off right and let the premiere put the show back on track.
There has been a feeling among many House of the Dragon fans that season 2 was a bit lackluster in terms of plots, characters and the overall story arc. There have been accusations that HBO slashed its budget and the 2023 Hollywood strikes affected things by preventing on-set script alterations amid a rushed filming schedule. It’s all combined to push the mentality that season 2 was a major letdown that disappointed millions of fans.
That means HBO and the producers want to kick off season 3 in a way that pulls back viewers, old and new, and it’s not just the drama of various characters talking about politics. Now, it’s full-scale war, and this episode promises plenty of it.
A recent Deadline report confirmed that the Battle of the Gullet alone takes up nearly half an hour, leaving little time for the rest of the episode to focus on people standing around in rooms talking. That’s sure to get the season off on the right foot, captivating folks and driving home why the opening for season 3 needed to be among House of the Dragon’s longest episodes yet.
House of the Dragon season 3 premieres Sunday June 21 on HBO.
