The latest trailer for season 3 of House of the Dragon delivers exactly what fans have been waiting for: dragons, battles, political intrigue, and the (finally) escalating chaos of the Dance of the Dragons.
Beneath the spectacle, the new clips point toward a deeper theme. Keeping the throne may prove far more difficult than winning it.
With no time wasted in reminding viewers that Westeros is fully at war, the trailer is flooded by scenes of brutal combat, dragonfire, and bloody battlefields. It reinforces that the conflict between the Blacks and the Greens has moved beyond political maneuvering and into outright destruction.
It’s time to break down the latest trailer scene by scene and examine what we can expect from the next chapter from House of the Dragon.
The Battle of the Gullet
The long-anticipated Battle of the Gullet appears to be a major centerpiece of the season, promising one of the largest and most ambitious action sequences the franchise has attempted (showrunner Ryan Condal has even compared it to the infamous Helm’s Deep from Lord of the Rings).

The trailer begins with Daemon Targaryen taking part in the Battle of the Fishfeed. Shortly afterward, viewers get a glimpse of Sheepstealer engaged in combat during the Battle of the Gullet.
This may confirm the leaks about Sheepstealer and its dragonrider.
Rhaenyra takes King's Landing
In the aftermath of the Gullet, Rhaenyra’s dragons appear to advance toward King’s Landing. A tense confrontation between Alicent and Aemond follows, where she states rather ominously “Rhaenyra is coming.”

The Red Keep itself is shown encircled by dragons, with Syrax settling on a courtyard wall.
In the Red Keep, Daemon cuts down several green guards in front of Rhaenyra, whose voiceover says, “Their defeat is written.”
King’s Landing receives considerable attention, with several shots highlighting the city’s streets, flooded with people trying to get away from the conflict.

Alicent and Helaena can be seen attempting to escape amid the turmoil. Later, Helaena is shown weeping beneath the Red Keep’s weirwood tree. Could this scene be connected to what fans speculated was a birthing scene featuring her?
The trailer continues with Aemond and Vhagar at Harrenhal, while Rhaenyra visits Alicent in what appears to be her former chambers: the former queen mother has become a prisoner. Alicent tells Rhaenyra, “I see you have been merciful. But the crown is a weight that crushes. You’ll do things that spell death for all involved.”
This highlights how far Alicent has fallen since her attempt to secure power.
Additional scenes depict Rhaenyra walking with Daemon before later clashing with Mysaria. A mysterious message from the Greens seems to arrive, and Rhaenyra is shown setting part of the Red Keep on fire.
One sequence features a lavish gathering organized by Rhaenyra for the capital’s nobility. According to some fans, the feast could represent a deliberate humiliation of former Green supporters, with guests being served rats.

Despite her victory, she appears unable to find peace. This feeling is portrayed by Rhaenyra suddenly awaking in her bed, with Aemond’s voiceover saying, “She’ll certainly fail.”

The Battle of Tumbleton
The Hightower army, commanded by Ormund Hightower, is presented as a formidable force. Among its ranks is Tessarion, The Blue Queen, whose appearance further hints at Daeron’s long-anticipated role in the story.
The wife of Hugh Hammer, Kat, is shown watching her husband on Vermithor. Corlys Velaryon is also seen alongside Daemon in the same location, which should be Tumbleton, reiterating that Rhaenyra’s subjects do not feel safe.

The trailer then returns to Tumbleton, where Ormund arrives while Rhaenyra and Mysaria move through the area surrounding the Sept of Baelor. Judging by the crowd’s reaction, the smallfolk remain unconvinced by the new regime.
Tensions continue to rise as Rhaenyra chastises Baela, while Daemon travels to the Eyrie to meet his daughter Rhaena. The Winter Wolves and Roddy the Ruin are shown marching toward Tumbleton, and Daemon shares a scene with Black Aly.
As the conflict escalates, Vermithor soars above Tumbleton. Daemon and Mysaria argue during a small council meeting before he departs to take the city.

Battle sequences dominate the trailer
Battle scenes dominate the latter portion of the trailer. Gwayne fights amid the chaos at Tumbleton while Corlys watches his camp burn.
At the same time, Aemond battles at Harrenhal, Rhaenyra prays in King’s Landing (with Daemon saying off-camera, “You’ve come so far, and yet you still do not know who you are”), and Sharako Lohar takes part in the fighting at the Gullet.

Rhaenyra appears to begin to lose her grip
The eerie atmosphere of Harrenhal is reinforced by shots of the Whent bats. Rhaenyra is also seen uncovering her father’s model of Valyria. Another mysterious scene appears to show Alys receiving a dragon egg, but by whom? We suggest Aemond, who seems to be planning a coup of his own.

Rhaenyra shouts, “Bring Aegon, the usurper, to me,” sending a chill down everybody’s spines.
The trailer’s final moments feature Aegon shouting orders to his soldiers, someone entering a dragon’s lair, and what appears to be Alicent arriving at Harrenhal.
The closing shots suggest a darker transformation for Rhaenyra, portraying her as increasingly ruthless as the war continues. We fear this is heading toward a Mad Queen moment that might overthrow the whole point of the series.

What makes the trailer particularly effective is its imagery: it suggests that every victory comes at a cost and that the pursuit of the Iron Throne may ultimately destroy those who manage to seize it.
If the trailer is any indication, season 3 will move beyond the question of who deserves to rule and instead examine what ruling actually does to a person. In Westeros, the throne has never been a reward. It is a burden that consumes everyone who reaches for it.
House of the Dragon returns on June 21 on HBO Max.
