Filming on the final season of House of the Dragon might not kick off until the new year, but production on the final season is officially weeks away from beginning.
According to a new report from Film Base UK (h/t Wiki of Thrones), production on the final season of House of the Dragon is slated to begin sometime in October in Leavesden. As has been the case with past seasons, Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden will again serve as the primary production and filming hub for the final season of the show.
The October start date for pre-production lines up with comments from showrunner Ryan Condal, which indicated that the plan was for production to kick off sometime in the fall. This is yet another positive indication that all is running on time so far and there have not been any delays in the envisioned production timeline, which is always a relief with shows such as House of the Dragon.
Now, you might be thinking, “Wait, if filming doesn’t even begin until 2027, what do you mean production is starting in October?” which is a fair thought to have. It’s definitely confusing to hear filming starts in early 2027 and then be told to get excited that production is starting before 2026 comes to a close.
Before the cast can assemble to begin filming the final season, the production team has a lot of work to do, and that work begins in October. When production begins this fall, the creative team behind the show will begin working on preparing and building set pieces for the final season on the Warner Bros. Studios' lot and finalize locations for the show’s on-location shoots, which will take the cast on-location to film exterior shots that help bring the show to life.
Although the final season will be a bit shorter than many fans had hoped, with an eight-episode season planned for the final season, it’s expected that the final season will be the show’s biggest yet. Without getting into spoilers from Fire & Blood, let’s just say that there are a lot of big sequences that are coming in the final season and some epic moments ahead.
Bringing those moments to life takes a lot of work, and the pre-production stage of the process is when the groundwork is laid for making sure everything runs smoothly and when a lot of the polishing on the season is done. The months ahead will be crucial in making sure all is good to go when cameras begin rolling in 2027. We’ll then see the show enter several months of filming before the show enters post-production, which is when the magic begins in bringing the world of Westeros to life via the show’s spectacular special effects.
