We've only just seen the climactic finale for House of the Dragon season 3, but for showrunner Ryan Condal, the marathon never stops. Work is already underway on the Game of Thrones prequel's fourth and final season, which is tentatively set to bring the tragic tale of House Targaryen's fall to a bitter end sometime in 2028. If you thought the series finale of Game of Thrones was hard to swallow, just wait till you see how the Dance of the Dragons plays out.
Two year gaps between seasons have become the unfortuante norm for big budget prestige television in today's media landscape, but for House of the Dragon, it's more necessary than most. It takes time to bring awe-inspiring beasts like Caraxes and Vhagar to life on screen, let alone conduct all the other extensive work that goes into the series. Fortunately, Condal has confirmed that season 4 is running right "on schedule," which should help it meet that all-important 2028 release window. What's more, he revealed the show's upcoming production timeline, and it's good news all the way down.
"The whole season is payoff,” Condal told Empire. “We’re all on schedule, prep starts in the fall. So we’ll go back and start revising the scripts, planning sets, location scouts are already happening over the course of the summer to figure out new places we’re going. And then before you know it, hammers will be swinging and 3.4 million screws will be being put together at Leavesden.”
“We’ll start again filming early 2027, and I’m really looking forward to the Last Dance, as we’re calling it on our side,” he added. “There will certainly be more dragons, I can guarantee you that."
How long will it take to film House of the Dragon season 4?
Condal's update is exciting for a few different reasons. The first and most obvious of course is his promise of more dragons and a season's worth of payoffs, which sounds just about right for the final outing of this epic series. If you've read Fire & Blood, you know there are quite a few important events ahead, ranging from battles on the scope of the season 3 finale's Battle of Tumbleton, to dragon duels and shocking, small-scale character moments. Given the amount of major events left to go, and the show's eight-episode seasons, House of the Dragon will need to pull out all the stops to reach an appropriate ending.
The second reason Condal's words about season 4 are reassuring is the timeline. Production on House of the Dragon season 3 ran from late March to early October, 2025. After those six months of filming ended, post-production and marketing for the show ran for another eight months until it premiered on June 21, 2026.
While there's always a chance filming could run longer for the show's final season, there's a good chance that if it begins filming in early 2027 it'll likely run on a somewhat similar schedule. The means that barring any unforeseen events like occurred during season 2, we should be watching the big finish sometime in summer 2028.
While it's never fun to wait two years between seasons of a great show, the fact that this is the last time we'll see characters like Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen, Alicent Hightower, Aemond and Aegon Targaryen, and all the show's dragons on screen lessens the sting of it a bit. Endings are important, as Game of Thrones fans know all too well. For all its ups and downs, House of the Dragon season 3 ended on an extremely strong note. I'd much rather the series take its time to do the same for season 4, especially considering how many main characters and dragons will meet their doom before the curtain falls on this tragic era of the Targaryen dynasty.
Fortunately, we'll have the second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to tide us over in the meantime. That is expected to premiere in early 2027. After that, you may as well start your House of the Dragon rewatch and get prepared to have your heart devastated by Aegon II and Rhaenyra's final clash for the Iron Throne in 2028.
