House of the Dragon wasn't snubbed by the Emmys: Here's why the show wasn't nominated

Since its premiere last month, House of the Dragon season 3 has been one of the most talked about shows on television, just as expected. The long-awaited new season has marveled fans far and wide as some of the show's most highly anticipated twists have taken shape after the Battle of the Gullet, including Rhaenyra taking the Iron Throne and rising to power in King's Landing.

While the third season has received a bit of mixed feedback among devoted fans, House of the Dragon has once again proven why it's so beloved and a worthy successor to Game of Thrones. The season has (so far) earned critical acclaim, a noted change from the overwhelming conversation from the previous season (again, so far).

But you would think that with all of the excitement and positive reception surrounding House of the Dragon season 3, we would have seen the show be one of the most nominated shows when the 2026 Emmy Award nominations were announced on July 8. However, the series didn't receive any nominations, but don't call it a snub. There's a simple reason the show wasn't nominated.

House of the Dragon season 3 isn't eligible for Emmy nominations in 2026

So, why wasn't House of the Dragon nominated at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards? It's as easy as can be: The third season isn't eligible just yet, as the premiere date occurred outside the eligibility window. In order to have been nominated at the 2026 Emmys, a show needed to have aired between June 1, 2025 and May 31, 2026. Clearly, season 3 did not meet that requirement.

House of the Dragon season 3 began airing on HBO and HBO Max on June 21, 2026, almost one month after the eligibility window for this year's Emmy Awards expired. While some fans might worry about the show still being at the top of voters' minds by the time next year's Emmys roll around, there's no doubt that the show will manage to be one of the top nominees in 2027.

The first season earned an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, and while no performances were nominated, the first two seasons earned plenty of recognition in the technical categories at the Creative Arts Emmys. The season season was snubbed, but with the renewed interest and acclaim, HBO will surely make a focused push for the series and Emma D'Arcy.

Skipping this year when it comes to the show's Emmy eligibility will only further keep the series in the conversation, especially since House of the Dragon season 4 won't premiere until sometime in 2028 as HBO has already confirmed. The series can remain at the forefront of our minds thanks to news and updates about production as well as the chatter surrounding hopeful awards buzz.

But sitting a year out also allows for the unknown regarding competition. It's unclear which shows House of the Dragon could be competing against at next year's Emmys race. Severance could be back on Apple TV or there could be a hot new Netflix show that completely dominates both our watch lists and award season. But getting those nominations is just half the battle.

Even though House of the Dragon wasn't eligible this year and wasn't recognized for season 3 yet, the Game of Thrones universe wasn't completely shut out at the Emmys in 2026. Fellow prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms earned a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, a deserved nomination for the show's fresh take on Westeros and a series that took fans by surprise.
