How many seasons will Invincible have?

According to Invincible creator Robert Kirkman, we can expect the superhero show to run for 7-10 seasons.

Steven Yeun (Mark Grayson), Khary Payton (Black Samson), Ross Marquand (Robot), Gillian Jacobs (Atom Eve), Ben Schwartz (Shapesmith), Jay Pharaoh (Bulletproof)

The third season of Invincible is heading to Prime Video very soon. The first two seasons introduced us to Mark Grayson, aka Invincible, a young superhero who has to shoulder a lot of responsibility very quickly. That's only going to get more intense in season 3, which kicks off on Thursday, February 6.

Invincible is based on a comic book of the same name by Robert Kirkman, the same guy who created The Walking Dead comic, itself adapted as an incredibly long TV show. Invincible is a massive comic; on the show, Mark is only now entering the middle stages of his journey. So how long could this show run? Kirkman has given a couple of answers. Here's what he told Polygon in September of 2023:

"I’m trying not to pin it down to a number, because it is somewhat of a moving target. I think in the seven-to-eight-season range seems like it would be enough. But there could be some things we move through a little faster, some things we expand. If we’re fortunate enough to go for a good long time, I think that would be enough to cover the entire comic. And there are some things along the way that didn’t get into the comic that I’d like to do. I think it’d be cool to have some episodes here and there that are completely original. So that’s part of the plan moving forward."

So in 2023, Kirkman was eyeing seven or eight seasons. Here he is revisiting the subject while speaking to Collider in December of 2024, much more recently:

"The way [writer Simon Racciopa] and I have mapped out, where we would kinda follow the comic and where the breaks would be, roughly eight seasons. Could be seven, could be ten...Or nine. I can be greedy."

So here, Kirkman is contemplating seven-10 seasons, giving himself a bit more room. But that's still roughly in keeping with what he said the year prior. If I had to throw out a number, I'd say that Invincible will run eight seasons in total when all is said and done. If Kirkman wanted to make good on thoughts about including completely original material not based on the comic, I wouldn't mind, and perhaps that could blow it up a bit.

In any case, even if we're very conservative in our predictions, Invincible isn't yet halfway through with its run. There's lots of big twists and turns for Mark and company ahead. And Prime Video seems like it's willing to support the show. Word is that the company has already renewed the show for multiple more seasons, hopefully meaning that we won't have to wait interminably long periods of time between them.
