Prime Video's Invincible is one of the finest superhero shows on television right now. The animated series aired its brilliant third season earlier this year, and now fans are back in the long wait for season 4, which is expected to premiere sometime in 2026.
The Invincible series still has a long way to go before it reaches the conclusion of the beloved comics by Robert Kirkman. Many of the best moments, key twists, and huge galactic battles are still to come. At its current pace, fans can expect Invincible to run for at least eight seasons, but Kirkman has previously teased that there could be as many as 10.
The second season came after a grueling two-year hiatus. To make up for it, fans got a bonus standalone episode chronicling the origin story of fan-favorite character Atom Eve. It was the first time that Invincible had aired a standalone episode, and we haven't had any more since. However, with the shocking death of beloved hero Rex Splode (Jason Mantzoukas) in season 3, fans believe it could be fun to revisit the origins of his character in another standalone installment.
Kirkman is keen to explore Rex Splode's character again, but probably not for a while. “We would love to do more specials,” he said on the Heroes Reforged podcast. “There’s definitely been a lot of talk about doing a Rex Splode special. We just haven’t been able to find the time to make it work.”
Making another standalone episode would mean breaking up the team, which has become a well-oiled machine at this point. “It would be the kind of thing where we’d have to pull part of the team off to do and, you know, it would derail what we’re trying to do with the season, so it’s something that I would love for us to be able to do at some point," Kirkman added.
All of that said, he sees the potential of a Rex Splode episode: "There’s obviously a story there and I think it would be additive to the series and would be really cool but it’s something that we just haven’t been able to pull together just yet.”
While Invincible might not be releasing any new standalone stories or spinoffs in the near future, Kirkman returned to the Invincible comics universe this year with a story all about Battle Beast, the fearsome intergalactic warrior (and cat person) who lives to find an opponent worthy of fighting him.
