The last few years have been a helluva run for writer-director Zach Cregger. Prior to the 2020s, Cregger was best known as a member of the televised comedy group, The Whitest Kids U' Know, and his resulting involvement co-writing, co-directing, and co-starring in the movie Miss March. That 2009 film infamously flopped at the box office and got devastatingly brutal reviews from general audiences and critics alike, but things have been decidedly different ever since his return to filmmaking in 2022. He’s written and directed three films in the past four years, and between Barbarian, Weapons, and the new Resident Evil, he has consistently delivered commercially successful, well-reviewed, generally beloved films.

To this end, many people are very eager to see what else Cregger has up his sleeve, and as it turns out, the wait will not be very long. Cregger has already been busy writing his fourth solo feature film and prepping it for production, and recently, the film took another big step forward in casting its lead: Jennifer Lawrence has joined Cregger’s next film, The Flood.

The Flood has already become something of great interest and notoriety within the industry, in a truly unique way. The film will see Cregger collaborating with legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who will be producing the movie. Cregger spoke during the press run for Resident Evil recently about how Spielberg reached out to him with a finite window of time in which they could work together, predominantly because of how much the elder director enjoyed Weapons. This resulted in a situation in which Cregger basically had five days to try and think of something to pitch for him and Spielberg to work on, and as an avid science fiction fan, he decided to pursue a medley of the science fiction and horror genres.

The resulting script was The Flood, but don’t let that hasty turn-around time fool you. Cregger has been reticent to reveal much actual information about the upcoming project, but he did refer to it as “one you could put on my tombstone” and compared its size, scale, and ambition to Weapons much more so than Resident Evil. Putting Jennifer Lawrence into the midst of all of this only makes the project that much more intriguing from just about every angle.

Lawrence rose to fame in the dystopian sci-fi franchise The Hunger Games, and has been in numerous other science fiction projects over the years, such as Passengers. However, it’s critical to note that Lawrence has been much more selective with her projects in the past few years, and tends to take much bigger, wilder swings in her work these days than she used to be known for. Her performance in Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love opposite Robert Pattinson was absolutely mesmerizing, and about as bold of an onscreen performance as you’re likely to see this decade.

So the combination of Cregger having put all of this unique work into forging The Flood’s script under these unique circumstances alongside Spielberg, and it now having Jennifer Lawrence in the lead role? That is incredibly enticing and just makes me feel like the film’s 2028 release date can’t get here soon enough.
