With filming for the fifth season of superhero drama The Boys officially wrapped, Jensen Ackles is looking ahead to its spinoff, Vought Rising. Next month he begins filming for the new show, which he co-stars in alongside fellow The Boys star Aya Cash, who returns as the treacherous Nazi supe Stormfront, also known as Klara Vought. Elizabeth Posey will also star.
Set during the 1950s, Ackles will reprise his role as Soldier Boy, one of the first-ever Supers, but this time around we'll get to see him during his early days, not long after he was first created during World War II.
Per Collider, Ackles recently visited Live with Kelly and Mark to discuss the spinoff, providing an update on filming (starting in August) and what fans can expect to see in the new series. Unlike The Boys, where Soldier Boy is more akin to someone's grizzled grandpa, Vought Rising will see him during his early exploits.
“I’m excited to explore what that world looks like and feels like and sounds like, and see how those characters come to life in that setting. I’ve been playing Soldier Boy in modern day, but I’ve been playing him like he’s kind of an old guy. He’s a grandpa from back in the day, so it’ll be interesting to now play him with contemporaries," Ackles said.
And yes, Ackles says, the show will be just as "demented" as its predecessor. Co-host Kelly Ripa made sure to ask him that question specifically since fans are well aware of how unhinged The Boys can get. "Of course it will!" Ackles exclaimed. "It’s in the same [universe]."
Not much else is known about Vought Rising yet, except that it is being described as "a twisted murder mystery." As for Stormfront, she's likely going to be the show's main antagonist, although during this era she was still going by her old name, "Liberty."
He also mentions completing filming on The Boys and notes that the fifth and final season is expected to be released in 2026.
Speaking of The Boys season 5, Ackles recently shared some insight into the highly-anticipated Supernatural reunion taking place. Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins, who played Sam Winchester and Castiel, joined the show in guest-starring roles.
While we wait for The Boys and its spinoff, fans can catch Ackles starring in the Amazon series Countdown. New episodes are released weekly on Wednesdays on Prime Video.
