The Mandalorian is the first (and to some, still the best) live-action TV show set in the Star Wars universe. We've been following the adventures of mercenary Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his tiny protégé Baby Yoda, aka Grogu, for three seasons now, but all good things must come to an end. Although there's no official confirmation, it seems like the series will conclude with a movie called The Mandalorian & Grogu, rather than with a fourth season.
I suppose the show could continue after the movie, but it feels like we're reaching a climax here. We don't know much about the plot of The Mandalorian & Grogu as of yet, but the cast certainly looks interesting. Obviously Pascal will return as the Mandalorian himself. We also know that Sigourney Weaver is on board in a "very" fun role. And now, Variety reports that Jeremy Allen White, the Emmy-winning star of The Bear, will play Rotta the Hutt, the son of the blob-like alien Jabba the Hutt from the original Star Wars movies. Here's an artist's rendition of White in costume:
Just kidding, White will only be voicing Rotta the Hutt. Still, I love the idea of the buzzworthy actor sitting in makeup for nine hours becoming a giant blob. In addition to working on new episodes of The Bear, White is also starring in a Bruce Springsteen biopic called Deliver Me From Nowhere. Why not take a quick detour into major franchise filmmaking, and why not do it as a giant extraterrestrial slug?
Rotta the Hutt has actually appeared onscreen before, in the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars, where he was a little baby Huttlet who was kidnapped. There, he was voiced by David Acord.
The Mandalorian is set many years after this period, following the fall of the Empire in Return of the Jedi. So one assumes that Rotta has grown up. We don't know exactly what role he'll play in The Mandalorian & Grogu, but we know that his father Jabba is dead. In the TV show The Book of Boba Fett, a couple of Jabba's cousins tried to claim Jabba's old crime empire, but Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) ended up winning it instead. Perhaps that plotline will continue in The Mandalorian & Grogu, with Rotta the Hutt being the new threat de jour.
Or maybe he's a friendly Hutt who wants nothing to do with his dad's organized crime business. We'll find out for sure when The Mandalorian & Grogu lands in theaters on May 22, 2026.
