The latest episode of The Last of Us, "Feel Her Love," ended with Ellie (Bella Ramsey) getting revenge on one of the people who traveled to Jackson to kill her father, Joel (Pedro Pascal). After that, the episode wafted back in time; the last thing we see is Ellie waking up in her old bed back in Jackson, Joel alive and well.
Based on the trailer, this upcoming Sunday's new episode will stay in the past. That's certainly the feeling we get when looking at the 21 advance images HBO has releasing, many of which include Joel. Check them out below:

And of course, where Joel goes, Ellie goes too:

There are also plenty of shots of the two of them together:

The Last of Us is based on the video game series of the same name by Naughty Dog. In The Last of Us Part II, we take periodic breaks from the main story to watch flashbacks showing what happened between Joel and Ellie after the end of the first game, when Joel takes her to Jackson, and the beginning of the first, when they're estranged. How did things get that way between them? We're about to find out.
I recognize some of these images from the games. In particular, in the second game, there's a flashback where Joel takes Ellie to visit what remains of the Wyoming Museum of Science and History. It's a touching father-daughter moment, one of the last we get before things start to turn sour between the pair. It looks like we'll see that flashback in this new episode.
Joe Pantoliano debuts as Eugene
We also have a few pictures of Joel having lunch with Gail (Catherine O'Hara), who will later become his therapist:

In the early episodes of the season, we heard that there was an incident where Joel had to kill Gail's husband Eugene. From what we've heard, Joel had to do it, but there are still hard feelings. It looks like we're going to find out exactly what happened in this episode. Eugene will be played by Joe Pantoliano. Check him out below:

The next episode of The Last of Us airs this Sunday night on HBO and Max. It's the pentulimate episode of the season, so after this, it's only one more and things go dark. HBO has already ordered season 3, but unfortunately it's not due to shoot for awhile:
