Ask any Game of Thrones fan to choose the Mount Rushmore of Game of Thrones characters, and you’re likely to get a wide variety of characters. That’s always been the beauty of the series: it’s full of so many amazing characters, and every viewer will have their own unique favorites for their own equally unique reasons. Still, it goes without saying that there are certainly characters who are going to appear more frequently than others when it comes to honing in on the four greatest, most important, or most iconic figures from the franchise.
In fact, when you ask this question to a fan of the show, you tend to expect that they’ll go to some of the show’s most mainstream and popular characters, ones whose impact on the franchise is truly immeasurable. We’re talking about characters such as Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, Tyrion Lannister, Arya Stark, Jaime Lannister, Ser Brienne of Tarth, Cersei Lannister, and Ned Stark. Those are characters who are just as beloved by casual fans as they are by the most die-hard fans of the franchise.
Of course, there’s one way to make the Mount Rushmore debate even more interesting: ask one of the people who was actually part of Game of Thrones to make the picks.
Kit Harington is currently in the midst of a press tour for MGM+’s Tale of Two Cities limited series, but of course no interview with Harington is complete without at least some nod to the role that launched his career. During a segment for ABC News Live’s social media accounts, Harington was challenged with revealing what his personal Mount Rushmore of Game of Thrones characters would look like, and his selections have already sparked plenty of debate among fans.
After joking about his lack of American knowledge when first asking for clarification on how many people are on Mount Rushmore, Harington got down to business and began selecting the four characters he felt were most deserving of the honor, choosing an unexpected name right out of the gate with Bronn.
His second pick was a bit more mainstream with Tyrion, who is a character most fans would put on the Mount Rushmore of Game of Thrones, as he was, without argument, one of the greatest characters in the entire series. And that was where the wheels fell off, and we got a pair of characters not likely to make it onto most fans’ Mount Rushmore: The Mountain and Drogon.
Sure, the Mountain and Drogon are amazing characters, but I don’t think anyone – well, I didn’t think anyone – would be jumping to put the pair at the top of the list and etch them into the Game of Thrones Mount Rushmore. And I’m not alone.
Fans have been quick to question Harington’s choices, which have left fans speechless and wondering if his selections were pure rage bait. Some even have gone as far as to question whether his selections just outed him as someone who never watched the actual show.
“This was certainly rage bait, or he never watched the show,” commented one puzzled fan. “He was just saying names he could remember,” joked another.
Many fans couldn’t believe he didn’t even include his own character, Jon Snow, who would certainly be on many fans' lists, including those who took to the comments to share their own personal selections. In fact, the comments became flooded with fans’ own personal lists, many of which included the likes of Jon Snow and several characters fans were shocked not to see on Harington’s list, such as Daenerys Targaryen and many of the Starks.
If Bronn, Tyrion, The Mountain, and Drogon are truly Kit Harington’s Game of Thrones Mount Rushmore, we can honestly say it might be time for him to give the show another watch.
