Matt Smith opens up about House of the Dragon's most complicated love triangle

Some of the hardest battles in House of the Dragon aren't fought on a battlefield. To prove that, Matt Smith has discussed the show's newest love triangle.

Don't you hate it when your wife is also your niece, and your ex-wife becomes your newest "rival" because she is in love with your niece, who also happens to be your current wife? Following the story of Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) is definitely not for the faint of heart.

The Game of Thrones universe is filled with a lot of complicated "love stories" because half the time marriages are arranged, meaning there isn't any love involved in the equation. The other half of the time, family members will just wed one another to keep bloodlines pure and establish strategic military alliances. However, there are a few rare instances when actual feelings are involved, and that happens to be the story of Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) in House of the Dragon.

There's only one teeny tiny problem with this newly founded (and secret) love: Mysaria is the ex-wife of Daemon, who just so happens to be Rhaenyra's current husband. Needless to say, this is a very delicate scenario, and Matt Smith has finally given us his thoughts on the situation.

"I was always really pressing the writers to explore that particular trio of a relationship because I think it's really entertaining dramatically," Matt Smith told Gizmodo during an interview. "I think Sonoya [Mizuno] is such a beautiful, acute actor that I just love being on screen with her. And I think, weirdly, Mysaria really dragged Daemon out of his grief with his brother in a way and really empowered him, and there was a whole world in which he could have just run away into the mountains with her."

Daemon and Mysaria's relationship didn't last long, as audiences saw it play out over a few episodes in season 1 before it completely came to an end. The two have barely interacted with each other since then, but they finally reunited in season 3. Now, Daemon has discovered that Mysaria acts as Rhaenyra's advisor, and tensions are at an all-time high.

"There's a deep, deep, deep affection for her even though there is this sense of betrayal." Matt Smith continued, "So I think it's a many-edged sword—it's not even double-edged, it's triple-edged, you know what I mean? It's really complicated, and there's a charge about the energy when all three of them are in the room."

So how did this situation come to be in the first place? Well, to prepare for the ongoing Dance of the Dragons civil war, Daemon Targaryen traveled to Harrenhal in an attempt to take over the castle and raise a land army to fight the Greens. In doing so, Daemon left his wife, Rhaenyra, completely alone in Dragonstone. There, she had to deal with no shortage of political conflicts and make many hard decisions on her own. Eventually, she found an ally and a romantic interest in the form of Mysaria.

The finale of House of the Dragon season 2 finally saw Rhaenyra and Daemon reunite. However, things quickly went awry in season 3 when Daemon and Mysaria saw each other again for the first time in years, found out they serve the same queen, and established that they don't trust each other. Daemon now sees his ex-wife as an unpredictable threat given how close she is to Rhaenyra. On the other hand, Mysaria knows Daemon can't be fully trusted. But if that wasn't enough, there's always the chance that things could get worse.

No one knows about the kiss between Rhaenyra and Mysaria, and the two haven't had the chance to talk about the situation yet. But if Daemon were to find out about this little secret, then all manner of chaos would surely ensue. Fortunately, it won't be long before we discover how this tale will play out.

New episodes of House of the Dragon are released every Sunday on HBO and HBO Max.
