After six years without a new Star Wars movie, Disney and Lucasfilm are getting back to it. The Mandalorian & Grogu, a movie continuation of the TV series, will be out next year. Then, in 2027, we'll get Star Wars: Starfighter. We don't know a ton about the new movie except that it stars Ryan Gosling and will be directed by Shawn Levy, who helmed Deadpool & Wolverine. And now, The Hollywood Reporter has it that it will star Mia Goth as a villain.
Mia Goth's star has been on the rise lately. She was front and center in the horror films Pearl and Infinity Pool, and has roles in upcoming movies like Frankenstein and The Odyssey. As for Star Wars: Starfighter, THR says that Ryan Gosling's character will be protecting some young charge from evil pursuers. Goth will play one of those pursuers.
"Adult protects child from evil forces" is one of Disney's absolute favorite plots when it comes to Star Wars. That's basically the story of The Mandalorian as well as Obi-Wan Kenobi, but this time it's on the big screen.
Star Wars: Starfighter is set five years after The Rise of Skywalker, meaning it's set later in the Star Wars timeline than any movie or TV show yet made. It's supposed to be a standalone movie rather than a part of some bigger trilogy or series. Does this mean it won't have any legacy characters in it? No appearances from the likes of Luke Skywalker or Yoda or whoever? We'll know when we know.
One fun fact about Mia Goth's role is that at one point it looked like it might go to Mikey Madison, who became the first Gen Z actor to win a Best Actress Oscar with her win earlier this year for Anora. Apparently that didn't work out because of "money matters," so Goth got the role.
Star Wars: Starfighter comes out in theaters on May 28, 2027.
