Tonight, Netflix is dropping all sorts of teasers, trailers, and announcements in its Tudum event, where it highlights all the shows and movies coming to the streaming platform in the coming months. So far we've already got a trailer for the third and final season of Squid Game as well as the reveal that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 actor Mikaela Hoover will play the talking reindeer doctor Tony Tony Chopper in One Piece season 2. Where do we go next?
The answer: Frankenstein, the next movie from auteur director Guillermo del Toro, the mastermind behind Pan's Labyrinth and The Shape of Water. Yes, Guillermo del Toro is tackling Mary Shelley's classic horror novel. This trailer was easily one of the best parts of Tudum. Check it:
Frankenstein stars Oscar Isaac as Doctor Victor Frankenstein, along with Mia Goth, Christoph Walz, and Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein's monster. Del Toro has had a long run of creating excellent movies in the horror, fantasy, and sci-fi genres, so there's no doubt that Frankenstein is a perfect fit for his style.
“This film has been on my mind since I was a child — for fifty years," del Toro said at the event. "I’ve been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with Frankenstein, and they probably would be right. You see, over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography. It doesn’t get more personal than this. I hope you enjoy this small look at Frankenstein."
This trailer plays up the disquieting journey of Doctor Frankenstein as he first gets the idea to create the monster, all the way through to the creation and inevitable fallout. We only get a few glimpses of Elordi as the monster, but they're enough to leave an impression. I wasn't super interested in this new take on Frankenstein before watching this trailer, but now I am officially ready to be seated.
We don't have a solid release date yet for Frankenstein, but we do have a general idea. It will release in Fall 2025. Who wants to bet that it'll drop around Halloween?
