No, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is not set in Dorne

A quote from showrunner Ira Parker has been taken out of context, and it's confusing A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms fans.

The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is over, and now we're into the long wait for season 2. Fortunately, this latest Game of Thrones spinoff is speeding right along; it's already several months into filming its second season, which will debut in 2027. We're back to annual seasons, everyone!

In the meantime, fans are picking over every tidbit of information and interview with the cast and crew they can find to give us an idea of what's in store. And while there have been some exciting bits of insight — from characters who won't be returning to new filming locations and more — there's one particular bit of misinformation that has been making the rounds: that season 2 will be set in Dorne.

If you've read George R.R. Martin's novella "The Sworn Sword," which forms the basis for season 2, you know this isn't quite right. So let's break down the details, and do our part to make the internet less dark and full of terrors.

When do Dunk and Egg go to Dorne?

The claims going around in articles and on social media that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is set in Dorne originated from an interview that showrunner Ira Parker did with Variety. In it, Parker is asked if Dunk and Egg go to Dorne in season 2.

"They do go to Dorne. How much of that we cover, I’ll leave up to people to tune in for Season 2. I don’t know if I’m supposed to talk about it yet," Parker said, before adding that, "For the most part, we’re following the books. So Season 1 was 'The Hedge Knight.' Season 2 is 'The Sworn Sword.' Hopefully, if we get to Season 3 it’ll be 'The Mystery Knight.'"

Seems like a pretty cut-and-dry confirmation that season 2 is in Dorne, right? Not so fast. "The Sworn Sword" is set around a year and a half after the events of "The Hedge Knight," which formed the basis for season 1. During that time gap, Dunk and Egg travel around southern Westeros, with notable stops at Oldtown to visit Egg's older brother Aemon, and Dorne, where they search for the puppeteer Tanselle Too-Tall.

However, they don't stay in Dorne. The book begins with Dunk and Egg in the southwestern part of the Reach, where a terrible drought has overtaken the land surrounding the stronghold of Standfast. The entirety of the novella takes place in and around Standfast and its neighboring keep, Coldmoat. Parker confirmed in that same quote that the season is staying relatively true to that story, so don't expect Dunk and Egg to go hang out at the Water Gardens or the Planky Town for all of season 2.

Of course, that doesn't mean we won't see Dorne at all in season 2 — it does seem like Parker pretty much confirms we will. My guess would be that we'll either see brief bits of it in flashbacks to Dunk and Egg's travels, or it might feature as part of an opening montage for the season that ends with Dunk and Egg back in the Reach at Standfast. It will be exciting to see any part of Dunk and Egg's journey through Dorne, but I wouldn't expect it to be an especially large part of the season.

Hopefully, that clears up a bit of the confusion. Yes, it sounds like we are going to see Dunk and Egg in Dorne during season 2. However, the main story of season 2 is not set in Dorne, and therefore the southernmost part of the Seven Kingdoms probably won't feature too prominently.

Then again, Parker and his team could be switching things up big time to give fans more time in Dorne. We won't know till we watch!

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 is streaming now on HBO Max. Season 2 is currently filming, and will air sometime in 2027.
