When it comes to Game of Thrones characters whom fans want to see again, there are a couple of usual suspects. Jon Snow is often mentioned; in fact, actor Kit Harington was even working on a follow-up series before it was shelved. Fans have also expressed interest in seeing what happens next to Arya Stark (Maisie Williams). There are hints that something could be in the works there, although nothing definite.
But Game of Thrones had a ton of characters beyond those two. Recently, Bang Showbiz asked Tara Fitzgerald (Selyse Baratheon) if she'd ever be interested in coming back. “Oh god, of course yeah! That was something that I was really blessed to have been a part of that show," she said. “I love that show. I really love the show. So, of course. I’m sure any of the other actors would say ‘yes.’"
Of course, Fitzgerald realizes that a comeback is unlikely in Selyse's case. "Selyse met a very sticky end," she remembered. "So, I’m not so sure whether she could be resurrected.” If you'll remember, Selyse took her own life after she and her husband Stannis Baratheon burned their own daughter Shireen alive in a monumentally misguided attempt to offer up a sacrifice to the Lord of Light, whom they hoped would get rid of a snowstorm then waylaying Stannis' army. The storm did stop, maybe because the Lord of Light accepted the sacrifice or maybe because weather changes sometimes. In any case, it was quite possibly the most disturbing scene in the history of Game of Thrones, and ultimately none of the three family members survive it.
So I don't see Selyse ever coming back, but that actors like Fitzgerald still get asked is evidence of a desire for more of the great drama that Game of Thrones brought us. According to Fitzgerald, the quality ran through the show down to the smallest detail, to the point where she didn't feel like acting on the epic fantasy series was that different from acting in a small indie film.
“When it’s working well, I don’t think there is that much difference," Fitzgerald said. “For instance, on ‘Game of Thrones’, the care and attention that was put into everything on that … and the hands on nature of it. I think, for instance, they’re comparable - very low budget, very high budget - at their best."
Of course, a low budget indie movie probably isn't going to have Game of Thrones-size battle scenes. “But then of course big set pieces, CGI or these huge differences. I suppose, as an actor, less of an ability to see the big picture than you would on something smaller," Fitzgerald continued. “When it’s run as well as ‘Game of Thrones’ was run, then the flavour is very much a sort of common enterprise.”
Selyse is long gone, but Fitzgerald is still appearing in TV, movies, and on stage to this day, having recently gotten top billing in the movie Portraits of Dangerous Women.
“I am still learning. There still is something to be gathered from any work experience. And it does essentially come down to people. Always," Fitzgerald said. "You can have all the best things going for a project with all the elements apparently in place and it doesn’t quite come together.”
