The second season of Netflix's live-action One Piece series premiered on March 10, and while it didn't reach quite the same viewership numbers as season 1, it was still a fantastic return for the fantasy pirate series. Whether the long wait between seasons 1 and 2 was a factor, we may never know, but Netflix isn't taking any chances with season 3, because it's coming out much sooner. Next year, in fact.
Today the streamer announced in a new video tease that One Piece season 3, subtitled "The Battle of Alabasta," is coming out in 2027. Agonizing waits between seasons of high-budget streaming shows has plagued our modern era of television, and any time a series can push back against that, we love to see it!

When did One Piece live-action season 1 come out?
Part of what makes this new release so exciting is that this is a big change from the gap between seasons 1 and 2, which was over two years long. One Piece season 1 premiered on August 31, 2023. Season 2 dropped on March 30 2026, making the wait between them a soul-crushing 31 months — just over two-and-a-half years. That's way too long to be away from the Straw Hat crew. Think of all the meat Monkey D. Luffy could have eaten in that time!
Obviously, Netflix didn't say exactly when in 2027 season 3 will drop, so we don't know if it will be exactly one year after season 2. But either way, it's going to be much shorter of a wait.
One Piece Netflix success
This is good news not only for fans, but for the series itself. Forbes reported that One Piece season 1 racked up 18.5 million views in its first four days, while season 2 came in a little lower at 16.8 million views and never managed to crack the Netflix Top Ten. However, considering the long wait between seasons, that number is actually very good. It's only a 9% drop. They compare it to Wednesday, which had a similarly long wait between seasons 1 and 2 and had a viewership decline of more than half.
Part of what has made One Piece have such staying power is its broad international appeal. This is a story that is beloved in many countries outside the U.S., and that has proven a huge boon to the series that has kept its viewership relatively consistent, even when it left viewers high and dry for so long.
Season 3 could be a watershed moment for the series, as it won't have to contend with that long of a wait and can capitalize more on season 2's momentum. It's also adapting an iconic arc from the manga that has the potential to serve as a new high for the series' storytelling, action, and drama.

What will One Piece: The Battle of Alabasta be about?
Based on the long-running and beloved manga by Eichiiro Oda, One Piece spans more than 1,100 issues as of this writing that span all the way back to 1997. There's a lot of story to tell. But one of the first truly epic arcs of the series is Alabasta, which we'll see adapted in season 3.
The Alabasta arc is a bit different from the events we saw in the previous two seasons because it takes place almost entirely in one place, the titular desert kingdom island of Alabasta, home to Princess Vivi (played by Charithra Chandran in the Netflix show). During season 2, the Straw Hats discovered that the kingdom is under siege by the nefarious plans of Mr. Zero, the leader of Baroque Works. Vivi uncovered the identity of this man, and it only makes him even more terrifying: his real name is Crocodile, and he's one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea.
Facing off against Crocodile and his elite Baroque Works agents serves as a massive test for Luffy and the Straw Hats. They're the most dangerous enemies the Straw Hats have faced at that point in the story by far, and the battles are bloodier, more intense, and test the crew's resilience to the absolute limit.
At the same time, the Alabasta arc itself also features a ton of drama relevant to the kingdom, which Crocodile has manipulted to a precarious state of civil war. Toss in some other new fan-favorite characters like the Baroque Works shapeshifter Bon Clay (to be played by Cole Escola) and Ace (to be played by Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña), and it's not much of a stretch to say that season 3 could easily be the Netflix show's best season to date.
LEGO One Piece gives Captain Usopp his time to shine
Clearly, Netflix is going all in on One Piece right now. Beyond the big news about season 3, the streamer also announced Lego One Piece, an animated special that's exactly what it sounds like: hijinks with the Straw Hat crew, LEGO-fied. This little spinoff special centers "Captain" Usopp (Jacob Gibson), as he spins a tall tale of his exploits. It should go without saying that this'll be a fun time, and we won't even have to wait all that long because it premieres on September 29 — perfect as a way to tide fans over before One Piece: The Battle of Alabasta.
And that's not all. Netflix is also producing an anime remake of the series, titled The One Piece, which they've just unveiled the first official sneak peek for — you can check it out here. They really are committing to this franchise, and I hope that means we'll get plenty more seasons of the live-action show in the years ahead.
"The passion of the ONE PIECE fandom is unparalleled—spanning generations, they’ve turned our live-action series into a true global phenomenon that continues to top the Netflix charts. We are massive fans too, which is why we’re going bigger than ever to bring the Grand Line to life across every medium,” said Marian Lee, Netflix's Chief Marketing Officer, in a press release. “From the epic high stakes of ONE PIECE: The Battle of Alabasta in 2027 to our first-ever LEGO animated special this September, a stunning anime reimagining with THE ONE PIECE, and an expanded line of products so fans can bring the adventure home, we are building a universe where every fan—whether lifelong or brand new—can find their place in the Straw Hat crew."
It's a good day to be a Straw Hat. Mark your calendars, and prepare for plenty more adventures ahead with Monkey D. Luffy and the gang!
