Original Ginny actor says a cameo in Max's Harry Potter show would be "confusing"

Love the idea or hate it, HBO is making a Harry Potter TV series, with the network ardently dedicated to faithfully adapting all seven novels. It's a massive undertaking and casting news is already coming into light. As for cameos from stars of the original films, there's bound to be one or two, but former star Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley) isn't sure whether she'll get involved.
Bonnie Wright portrayed Ginny Weasley in all eight of the original Harry Potter movies, putting her among the longest-serving cast members. Despite over a decade in the same role, she isn't particularly protective over the character. In fact, she's super excited to see how the new cast member interprets Ginny, whoever they end up being.
“All of us only looked after those roles for 10 years of our lives, and I’m excited for what’s next for that character,” Wright told Us Magazine. “There’s a million ways to interpret all the characters. So I’m excited.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming series, which is slated to begin filming midway through 2025, Wright remains uncertain about whether making a cameo in the new series is the right idea for her. “I think that would be confusing if we did, to be honest,” she admitted, after previously revealing that she's "open" to the prospect. “I mean, if they did maybe another story, but I think to be back at the same time as Ginny that would be — we might have some meta moments there, you know?”
No cast members from the original movies are confirmed to appear in the new show as of yet. Although most everyone, including Daniel Radcliffe himself, have voiced their support of the new kids coming in to play some of the most iconic characters in pop culture history. It was reported that upwards of 30,000 people sent in audition tapes to try out for Harry, Ron, and Hermione, including a 42-year-old man trying his luck for the role of Hermione. He failed, obviously, but at least there's a lot of interest.
For the record, Radcliffe doesn't sound interested in HBO's new show either, and seems happy to turn things over to the new cast. But it wouldn't be shocking if a few people from the movies popped up. The new Harry Potter series is set to premiere sometime in 2026 on HBO and Max. Are you excited? Let us know in the comments!
