Starz has released the first trailer for the sophomore season of Outlander: Blood of My Blood, which sends Claire and Jamie's parents into the chaos of 18th-century Scotland as the 1715 Jacobite Rising begins to tear the country apart.
If season 1 was about two young couples discovering love and fighting to stay together, season 2 appears ready to put those relationships through an even more brutal test.
Because this is Outlander, the main couples are separated yet again. And if the trailer is any indication, getting these couples back together is going to be anything but easy.
Love in the time of the Jacobite Rising
Season 2 picks up with Scotland on the brink of rebellion. As the clans are forced to decide where their loyalties lie, Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie find themselves pulled into the conflict from opposite directions.
Brian and his cousin Murtagh must return to Castle Leathers and pledge their support to Brian’s father. For Brian, that means fighting alongside a man whose ambitions could prove just as dangerous as the war itself. In a heated scene of the trailer, Brian violently handles his father. Are we going to finally see him stand up to the evil Lord Lovat?
Meanwhile, we see Ellen heading — supposedly — back to Castle Leoch, where her brothers Colum and Dougal have been feuding over how Clan MacKenzie should respond to the uprising since the first season.
And respond they will. In multiple scenes of the trailer, the MacKenzie brothers are fighting alongside Brian. I wonder how that reunion will pan out.
Henry and Julia can't catch a break
Henry and Julia Beauchamp have an entirely different problem — although it also involves being separated from the person they love. After their unexpected journey through time in season 1 left them lost and separated, Claire's parents finally manage to find each other again. Their goal is simple: return to their own time and reunite with their daughter.
Of course, nothing is ever simple in Outlander. Their plan goes horribly wrong, leaving Henry and Julia separated once again. Henry is left without the woman he loves and must also confront his own struggles with mental health as he searches for a way back to Julia. It looks like he’ll be forced to spend some time in a psychiatric hospital, away from his wife, newborn son, and daughter.
And of his daughter, little Claire, we see quite a bit in the trailer. We will surely have some glimpse of her childhood spent with Uncle Lamb.
Julia, meanwhile, is forced to return to Castle Leathers, where she must deal with her Scottish husband, Lord Lovat.
Blood of My Blood season 2 cast
Jeremy Irvine returns as Henry Beauchamp, while Hermione Corfield plays Julia Beauchamp, Claire’s parents. Jamie Roy stars as Brian Fraser, with Harriet Slater as Ellen MacKenzie, Jamie's parents.
The cast also includes Tony Curran as Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat; Séamus McLean Ross as Colum MacKenzie; Sam Retford as Dougal MacKenzie; Rory Alexander as Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser; and Conor MacNeill as Ned Gowan.
Matthew B. Roberts serves as showrunner and executive producer, with Outlander author Diana Gabaldon contributing to the writing of one episode, just like season 1.
Season 2 of Outlander: Blood of My Blood premieres September 18 on Starz, with new episodes arriving weekly on Fridays.
