Tomorrow, Starz will air the season 7 finale of Outlander, its venerable time-traveling romance show starring Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe as the dynamic husband-wife team of Jamie Fraser and Claire Fraser. After that, fans will have to endure one more Droughtlander before the eighth and final season of the show.
Some fans may already be wringing their hands over the idea of Outlander coming to an end. After all, the show has been running since 2014. How will fans plug the hole? Starz has a solution: a prequel series called Blood of My Blood, which will chronicle the romances between Jamie's parents in 18th century Scotland and Claire's parents in World War I-era England. Here's the cast breakdown:
- Harriet Slater as Ellen MacKenzie, Jamie Fraser's mother
- Jamie Roy as Brian Fraser, Jamie Fraser's father
- Hermione Corfield as Julia Moriston, Claire Fraser's mother
- Jeremy Irvine as Henry Beauchamp, Claire Fraser's father
Fans will also meet younger versions of characters from the original show, like Dougal MacKenzie, played by Graham McTavish on Outlander and Sam Retford in Blood of My Blood. Starz released the first teaser trailer for the show for the show above, which has all the breathless signs and smoldering glances Outlander fans could want.
We also get a premiere window: Blood of My Blood will be coming out this summer, which starts in June and ends in September. So however long the wait is for the eighth and final season of Outlander, at least fans will have something for the pain in the interim.
In fact, we can make some educated guesses about Outlander season 8 based on this news. The cast and crew more or less wrapped up filming on the final episodes in September of last year, so they've already had a while to focus on post-production. If they wanted to, they could probably air the final season near the end of 2025, which would make for a jam-packed year. I can also see them holding onto the final episodes until 2026 and making a big event out of it. You'll find out more when we do.
