Here’s a sentence I never expected to write, and I bet you never expected to read: Percy Jackson and the Olympians is coming to Netflix!
That’s right, the Disney+ original series based on Rick Riordan’s beloved books will soon be available for Netflix subscribers to enjoy across the globe! As first reported by Variety, Disney Entertainment and Netflix have struck a new expansive content licensing agreement, which will bring a number of hit Disney Entertainment titles to Netflix in the months ahead, making many available on the streaming service for the first time ever.
Among the extensive list of titles coming to Netflix are the first two seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which will drop on Netflix globally on October 4. This will be the first time that Percy Jackson and the Olympians episodes will be available to users outside of the Disney+ app and marks a major shift in the strategy we’ve seen from Disney Entertainment, which has typically kept its original content in-house.
Now, there is a catch to this deal. Percy Jackson and the Olympians seasons 1 and 2 will only be available to stream on Netflix for a limited time. In other words, once the seasons drop on Netflix, you’re not going to want to let them sit in your queue because they’ll be leaving Netflix much faster than most acquisitions. So why the short window?
It seems that as part of this expansive content licensing agreement, Disney Entertainment will license some properties, such as Percy Jackson and the Olympians, to Netflix on a limited basis in support of an upcoming release. In the case of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, the timing of the show’s release on Netflix is designed to help promote the upcoming third season of the show, which will stream exclusively on Disney+ beginning this November, with the season 3 premiere on November 20.
The hope here is that Netflix users will discover Percy Jackson and the Olympians via Netflix and want to then watch the third season when it premieres and airs over on Disney+ starting in November. And honestly, that’s sort of a brilliant play that will work out in the favor of both Disney+ and Netflix. Disney+ will get added exposure for the third season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, while Netflix will be able to add one of the most popular fantasy series to its catalog for a limited time and capitalize on its popularity by reaching users who haven’t watched the show on Disney+.
With Percy Jackson and the Olympians seasons 1 and 2 dropping on Netflix on October 4, it’s going to be exciting to see how well received the seasons are and how much viewership they draw. We wouldn’t be surprised at all if the series cracked the Netflix Top 10, which is certainly what both Disney Entertainment and Netflix are hoping to achieve. We’ll then get to see whether the show’s Netflix release helps boost season 3 viewership when the new season kicks off in November, which could help the show secure a fourth season.
Regardless of the results, the real winners in this deal are the fans who now have two options for catching up on Percy Jackson and the Olympians before season 3 premieres on November 20!
