Percy Jackson creators clear up confusion around season 2 casting change

This article contains SPOILERS for the first two episodes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2.

The first two episodes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians are now available for streaming, and they look very promising, as we are introduced to fresh new characters and see the dynamics between the old ones evolve.

We meet Percy’s (Walker Scobell) cyclops half-brother, Tyson (Daniel Diemer), Camp Half-Blood’s new activities director, Tantalus (Timothy Simons), and Hermes’ (Lin-Manuel Miranda) demigod son, Chris Rodriguez (Kevin Chacon). When it comes to Chris, there's a pretty significant recast twist we have to discuss.

While Chris did not have a prominent presence in season 1, the character was credited in the title card to actor Andrew Alvarez. However, despite Chris Rodriguez’s role being recast for the new season, Alvarez remains part of the cast under a different, unnamed role.

The show’s co-creator, Jonathan E. Steinberg, told Entertainment Weekly that naming Alvarez ‘Chris’ in the credits of the first season was more like a tease for the hardcore book-reader fans, and not a fleshed-out decision that kept the character’s future arc in mind. Now that adapting the second book, Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters, required Chris to have more screen time, the creators decided to cast an actor who better fit the character.

“[Alvarez] was only really named Chris in the credits [in season 1], but it was almost an Easter egg for the fans,” Steinberg said. “It wasn't something that we had really sort of made substantive. We wanted to just do a slight course-correct there while still keeping as much continuity from the first season as we could.”

Rick Riordan, the author of the series, who is closely associated with the show's production, also believes the recasting was necessary and does not significantly hamper the continuity of the show.

“When we were looking at what are we going to do in season 2, where the character comes a little more into the forefront, that's the casting that made sense at the time for that part,” Riordan said. “So much of it is who's the best for the part, who's available for the part, what makes sense with the timing? So this is really the first time that you see Chris Rodriguez as a full character, so it wasn't really so much of a recasting thing. It was just finding the way to make that part work with the right person who was available.”

Executive producer Craig Silverstein added that this slight retcon is not a big deal, since Alvarez’s character was not referred to as ‘Chris Rodriguez’ on-screen. He admitted that they weren’t “really fully thinking” when the previous decision was made. Sticking with it in Season 2 would have made things “complicated,” especially with Chris’ arc involving Clarisse (Dior Goodjohn) being an essential element of the second book.

The first two episodes of season 2 see Percy Jackson and Annabeth (Leah Jeffries) return to Camp Half-Blood, with Tyson tagging along, only to find that the school's barrier weakened due to an attack on Thalia Grace's tree. Also, Grover (Aryan Simhadri) has been kidnapped. They eventually figure out how to both save the school and rescue their friend, and now they must go on a new quest.

New episodes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 drop on Disney+ every Tuesday. Find out the full release schedule here.
