With the airing of "The Morrow," the final episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1, fans of the newest series based on George R.R. Martin's world of Westeros have turned their attention to the upcoming second season.
While the 2027 release date seems far off, filming for the season is already well underway, and HBO is tiding overeager fans over with some exciting casting announcements.
What to expect from season 2
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, short stories about a poor, wandering hedge knight named Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his young squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), secretly Prince Aegon Targaryen. Each season of the series will bring a different story to life, with the first season adapting Martin's original Dunk and Egg adventure, "The Hedge Knight."
As such, season 2 will adapt Martin's follow-up tale featuring his delightful duo, "The Sworn Sword." While this means that the stellar supporting cast from season 1 won't be returning for the show's next outing, it also acts as an exciting opportunity to meet and fall in love with new characters brought to life on screen for the first time. HBO's new announcement sets the stage for the next A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms cast, and one recently announced actor seems to fit his character like a glove.
Introducing Ser Eustace Osgrey

"The Sworn Sword" sees Dunk in the service of Ser Eustace Osgrey, the head of House Osgrey of Standfast, a castle in The Reach. However, by the time Dunk enters his service, the older knight has earned the nickname "Ser Useless," as his age has caught up to him. He's no longer the strapping young warrior who fought in the Blackfyre Rebellion.
After a peasant on Osgrey land is killed on the orders of Lady Rohanne Webber (set to be portrayed by Lucy Boynton in the upcoming season), Ser Eustace hires hedge knights to help protect his lands, including Dunk, as well as the somewhat less noble Ser Bennis of the Brown Shield (who will be played by Babou Ceesay). When Bennis's violent tendencies invoke Lady Rohanne's wrath, Ser Eustace instructs his sworn swords to prepare for a potential war by training up some Osgrey men, many of whom have never even held a sword before, to fight.
Additionally, Ser Eustace is the centerpiece of one of the most shocking plot twists in all of Dunk and Egg. Without spoiling the novella, this simple detail, which takes place around halfway through the story, changes everything audiences know about the character, as well as integrates a key piece of Westeros history into the main plot.

Where have you seen Peter Mullan before?
Taking on the role of Ser Eustace Osgrey is Scottish actor and director Peter Mullan. If that name sounds familiar, it may be because Mullan was just recently nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for his work in I Swear, in which he portrays Tommy Trotter.
Mullan has been a cinematic staple since making his film debut in The Big Man. Since then, he's gone on to appear in some huge movies, including the Best Picture-winning Braveheart, Trainspotting, Children of Men, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1, War Horse, and many more. Mullan also took home the trophy for Best Actor at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival for his role in My Name is Joe.
In addition to his work in front of the camera, Mullan has enjoyed success behind it as well. He is an acclaimed writer and director, having won the Golden Lion for his film The Magdalene Sisters back in 2002.
Fantasy fans may also recognize Mullan for his role in another major franchise. He portrays Durin III, the Dwarven King of Khazad-dûm, in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Interestingly, his Rings of Power and I Swear co-star, BAFTA winner Robert Aramayo, also appears in the world of Ice and Fire, having portrayed young Ned Stark in flashbacks throughout Game of Thrones seasons 6 and 7.
Mullan also appeared in the first season of the Outlander prequel, Blood of My Blood, so he’s no stranger to fantasy TV.
Ser Eustace needs the right actor to do him justice on screen. Peter Mullan is always the right actor, as evidenced by his decades-long career filled to the brim with accolades, successes, and incredible performances.
In the meantime, tide yourself over until A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 airs by streaming the first season, which is available on HBO Max.
