10 best The Last Kingdom characters not named Uhtred
By Joel Wagler
No. 4: Father Beocca (Ian Hart)
Father Beocca served as a father figure and a conscience for Uhtred. He was in Bebbanburgh when the series started and he always had our hero's best interests at heart, even when they were at odds with his master, King Alfred.
Beocca's position in the Wessex court seemed to be as Alfred's chief spiritual advisor and general counselor. He served to placate his king's feelings when Uhtred would raise Alfred's ire, which was often. He also seemed to always be reining in the young warrior, preaching patience, some Uhtred did not have a lot of.
Despite Uhtred's steadfast stance in supporting the old gods publicly, Beocca never seemed deterred by that, for he knew the young Saxon had a good heart. In fact, he had baptized Uhtred as a child and always held out hope his charge would return to Christianity.
Beocca was such an interesting character. He helped physically and spiritually save Uhtred's adopted sister, Thyra, and eventually marries her. He also never hesitated to pick up a sword or pike for battle and to jump into a shield wall if needed. Through all of this, he was a true believer and a man of God.
When Uhtred attempts to reclaim his ancestral home of Bebbanburgh in season 4, Beocca is killed, and his death weighs heavily on Uhtred for the rest of his life. He finally learns caution and patience, two things not in his nature, for the death of his friend.
Father Beocca could be placed anywhere in the top four of this list and few could argue. He was not only important to Uhtred, but to the series as a whole.
