The Witcher is based on the book series about professional monster hunter Geralt of Rivia by Andrzej Sapkowski. The Netflix series was developed by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and premiered in December 2019. The fantasy series is one of Netflix’s most popular shows. It tells the story of the witcher Geralt (Henry Cavill), who gets caught up in a massive war and conspiracy involving the young Princess Cirilla of Cintra (Freya Allan). Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), a powerful sorceress and Geralt's love interest, is also a major player.
There are three seasons of The Witcher available to watch on Netflix right now. The Witcher season 4 is also officially in the works on Netflix. Like The Wheel of Time, it’s not expected to return until 2025. Production has not started on season 4 yet, and that’s not the worst news; Henry Cavill left the series following the third season. He’s being replaced by Liam Hemsworth going forward. It’s going to be really interesting to see how that all plays out.
There are also some rumors that The Witcher will end after season 5, but those have not been confirmed by Netflix.
The Witcher differs quite a bit from The Last Kingdom, and it’s much more similar to Game of Thrones and The Wheel of Time with its fantasy elements. Still, at its core, this is a series about political alliances, a deception, and a small group holding everything together, which should be familiar to fans of The Last Kingdom.
