I can't believe I'm about to say this, but get ready to see a new Lord of the Rings movie this year!

Get ready to ride once more into the epic world of Middle-earth with New Line Cinema’s latest offering, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. This isn’t just another addition to the franchise; it’s a thrilling anime feature that promises to take us deeper into the lore we all adore, guided by the skilled hands of award-winning filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is set to hit theaters worldwide on December 13, 2024, with international releases starting on December 11. You have a few months left to gather your fellowship, stock up on lembas bread, and prepare for an adventure that promises to be as legendary as the tales of old.

Leading the charge is none other than Brian Cox, famous for his role as Logan Roy in Succession. He’ll be voicing Helm Hammerhand, the formidable King of Rohan. Alongside him, we have Gaia Wise as Héra, Helm’s courageous daughter; and Luke Pasqualino as Wulf, the cunning antagonist with a thirst for vengeance. And here’s a delightful treat for long-time fans: Miranda Otto reprises her iconic role as Éowyn, the Shieldmaiden of Rohan, serving as our narrator through this epic tale. Insert high-pitched, fangirl squealing here.

War of the Rohirrim: A saga of courage and defiance

Set a whopping 183 years before the events of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, The War of the Rohirrim dives into the history of Rohan. When the ruthless Dunlending lord Wulf launches a surprise attack against Helm Hammerhand seeking vengeance for his father’s death, Helm and his people are forced into a last stand at the ancient fortress of the Hornburg, what we later come to know as Helm’s Deep. This is a tale of resilience and heroism, as Héra steps up to lead the resistance against overwhelming odds.

This project has an impressive lineup of creative minds behind it. Philippa Boyens, an Oscar-winning screenwriter from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, is producing alongside Jason DeMarco and Joseph Chou. The screenplay is crafted by Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews, Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, based on a story by Addiss, Matthews, and Boyens. And that’s not all: Oscar winners Alan Lee and Richard Taylor, along with esteemed Tolkien illustrator John Howe, are back to ensure the visual splendor of Middle-earth is captured in all its glory.

As a die-hard Tolkien fan, this new installment feels like an early Yule present. I love the idea of diving into the history of Rohan, exploring the origins of Helm’s Deep, and experiencing the valor of Helm Hammerhand and his daughter Héra. It’s like finding a hidden chapter in a book you’ve read a thousand times: fresh, exciting, and full of potential. Kenji Kamiyama’s direction combined with a cast and crew who have already proven their mastery of Tolkien’s world means we’re in for a treat. The anime format is a bold and intriguing choice, one I'm actually very excited about, offering a new lens through which to view Middle-earth while still retaining the heart and soul of the original tales.

Get ready for The War of the Rohirrim. Whether you’re a seasoned scholar of Tolkien’s works or a newcomer to the saga, this promises to be an adventure that will leave you spellbound, cheering, and perhaps shedding a tear or two.

The road goes ever on and on, and we’re thrilled to walk it once more.
