We are now four episodes into Marvel's Disney+ series, Agatha All Along, and so far, it has not disappointed. As Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) and the rest of the coven, Lilia (Patti LuPone), Jennifer (Sasheer Zamata), Alice (Ali Ahn), plus Teen (Joe Locke) make their way down the Witches Road, things continue to get more *interesting*.
The road manages to keep finding ways to reveal deep, dark secrets, but in a teasing manner. It keeps us hooked on the storyline without telling us too much, and we are so here for it.
Last week, things left off on a somber note as Mrs. Hart/Sharon Davis (Debra Jo Rupp) took her last breath, and was seemingly dead when the episode closed out. The Witches Road managed to take away Mrs. Hart from us, but is she dead for good?
Read our review of this week's episode of Agatha All Along to find out Mrs. Hart's fate, along with the big moment that went down between Agatha and one other witch (we won't tell you who — at least not yet!). As always remember, MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!
Is Mrs. Hart alive?
It would stand to reason that Mrs. Sharon Hart Davis is indeed deceased. R.I.P. to the sweet neighborhood lady who only wanted to take care of her beautiful flower garden but got caught up in Agatha Harkness' mess.
With Mrs. Hart no longer in the world of the living, the coven is missing one member, which throws a wrench into the plan. It doesn't seem to rattle Agatha, however, because she's been on the Witches Road before, and it ended with just her as the sole survivor.
The rest of the coven is not pleased to hear this, but the truth remains: they still need one more witch to continue this journey. To conjure up someone, the coven comes together to do their witchy thing and does indeed manage to bring someone into the fold.
We have already met this person, and we can bet you can guess who it is: enter Rio Vadal (Aubrey Plaza), who appears in a very Hocus Pocus/The Ring type of way.
Once Rio is a part of the coven, all bets are off. I absolutely love Plaza in this series; she makes so much sense. Her spunk, sass, and vibes just make it all so enticing and fun, and of course, witchy.
The best part about Rio joining the coven as the Green Witch is that the rest of the coven is more or less as infatuated with her as we are. We shouldn't be but we are, and the coven's reaction to her proves our point very well.
The next trial...
Rio joining the coven comes at an opportune time as the next trial is just around the corner. This one, in particular, seems to rattle Alice up a bit, and we soon find out why.
It turns out that the house is a close, if not exact, replica of her late mother's recording studio. It drudges up something dark in her but it is that darkness that eventually leads the coven through yet another trial.
Can we just take a moment to say that all the witches transformed into very hot, sexy '70s attire upon entering the studio? Not sure where that came from, but we are so on board.
There is not a lot of time to gush over how amazing the witches looked, however, because the trial countdown went into effect in the form of the metronome. As the trial begins, each witch is marked by the curse, and ends up with what Alice originally believed to be a birthmark. It's actually the mark of a curse her mother once told her about; now all the witches have been branded in the same way.
Agatha quickly puts together that there is only one way out of this trial: they all have to break out in song. Sure, why not! We love an Agatha All Along jam fest, don't we? However, it is not just any song that they have to sing, but rather Alice's mom Lorna's ballad version of the Witches Road, which is actually a protection spell that has kept Alice alive all these years.
I love the moment as each of the witches takes their musical positions with Agatha at the helm as the lead singer. As they break out in song, the curse takes the form of something from Insidious plus The Nun. Alice finds her power through the song and banishes the curse away along with paving the path for the coven to win their second trial.
Ending of Agatha All Along Season 1, Episode 4 explained
Another trial is behind them, but the road still feels overwhelming. That impending sense of doom only worsens when Teen falls to the ground and faints after the coven's incredible performance of the Witches Road ballad.
The most concerned member of the coven is none other than Agatha herself, who is distraught over Teen's deteriorating state. She is eager to find out how to help him and rushes Jennifer to use her ability with potions to save him...and she does.
But the question remains: why is Agatha so worried when she essentially has treated Teen like her lackey? Well, I think we all know the answer to that question, and so does Rio.
For the last couple of weeks, there has been this agreement across MCU fans that Teen's identity is important. It's been theorized that he's Agatha's son Nicholas Scratch, while others believe him to be the Scarlet Witch's son Billy Kaplan.
Thanks to Rio, we have a major clue as to who he might not be. During a romantic, very heated moment between Agatha and Rio (we knew there was something going on there!), Rio whispers to Agatha, "That boy isn’t yours."
In that moment, Agatha's heart shatters because we all knew she was harboring that hope. These emotions could send Agatha spiraling in the episodes to come. Rio pulled a fast one there going in for what looked like a hot, heavy kiss only to drop a bomb on Agatha's heart.
I think this is very telling for what we can expect in the episodes yet to air: we don't know what is going on. We never really have, have we? When it comes to the MCU, we've all guessed, theorized, and assumed, but we've never really understood what's happening. I think in a similar fashion, Teen's identity will shock us. It won't be Nicholas Scratch, it won't be Billy Kaplan, and it won't be anyone we are expecting. Now, the trick is, will Marvel do justice by its fans and make it someone worthwhile? We'll have to keep our fingers crossed and keep watching to find out...
