Alex Kingston wants River Song to meet Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor Who
By Ashley Hurst
The Doctor Who franchise is undergoing something of a soft reboot right now with Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor, but despite the fresh restart, River Song actress Alex Kingston thinks there's still a space for her to make a triumphant return to the TARDIS for more adventures.
Kingston has played River Song alongside David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi, though she's probably best known for her big role in Matt Smith's era. Her final appearance came almost a decade ago in "The Husbands of River Song" in 2015. She did not return for Jodie Whittaker's run, but Kingston still feels like there's more story to be told. Speaking to Collider, the actress addressed a potential return aongside Ncuti Gatwa.
"It was such a wonderful journey and the journey may still continue," she said. "Who knows? I mean can you imagine just flying the TARDIS and going to all those incredible different dimensions in time and space. I mean, it's been an amazing journey and I fly the TARDIS better than he does."
Looking back at her long run, which was unique in that her story spanned several incarnations of the Doctor, Kingston thinks her character's personality didn't necessarily change, but rather adapted to the Doctor she was alongside. "No, I don't think my character differed, actually. She just sort of adapted to the personalities of each new Doctor. I mean, essentially, it's the same spirit but in a new body a little bit like when a snake sheds its skin," she explained.
"So it was sort of more like, oh hello. This is another facet of the person that I love that suddenly kind of opened up to me. And so I always found it's actually super exciting working then with a new incarnation of the doctor."
Of course, Kingston has not been confirmed to return to Doctor Who just yet. However, she can't escape the Doctor Who family. She's currently working on Douglas Is Cancelled, a new TV series from former Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat. Plus, her former Whoniverse castmate, Karen Gillan (Amy Pond), is also involved in the project!
New companion Millie Gibson hypes up new Doctor Who season!
Sadly, Millie Gibson (new companion Ruby Sunday) will only star in the new Doctor Who revival for one season before departing the show. But regardless of that, it's set to be one fantastic season that will no doubt kick off the Disney+ era of the franchise in style. In her first appearance alongside Ncuti Gatwa on Christmas Day 2023, the duo shined and fans can't wait for more.
Ruby's story is shrouded in mystery. Who are her parents? Who abandoned her outside a church as a baby? Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine (per RadioTimes), Gibson teased that fans should expect a big twist in the new season. "A twist. There's always a twist."
Moreover, she spoke about how much she loves the costumes in the new season, and revealed that her favorite episode takes place in the 1960s. "The sixties episode will blow people away," she said. "I think that's my favorite personally. It's a really cool episode with cool costumes. Any of the era episodes are always pretty iconic, aren't they?"
"I'm always blown away by the make-up team and the costume team, they're so good."
Doctor Who returns for new episodes in May 2024 on the BBC and on Disney+ for international viewers.
