Battlestar Galactica creator thinks "it would be great to go back and do another season"

Battlestar Galactica creator Ronald D. Moore has done quite a lot in his career since reviving the iconic sci-fi show, but he wouldn't mind taking another loop.

Ronald D. Moore is a writer and producer behind some beloved TV series, including Outlander on Starz and the excellent sci-fi show For All Mankind on Apple TV+. He really put himself on the map with his revival of the '70-era sci-fi show Battlestar Galactica, this time retooled for the mid-2000s. That show was twisty, exciting and thought-provoking, and even all these years later, Moore still wouldn't mind another bite at the apple.

He shared these thoughts with She Knows, which asked him which of his shows he'd like to go back and visit. “Oh, that’s hard, they’re all my children!" Moore said. "But, it would be great to go back and do another season of Battlestar.”

Moore's version of Battlestar Galactica ended pretty definitively, with the surviving members of humanity arriving on — pause for SPOILER WARNING — prehistoric Earth, where they abandon technology to live among the primitive people there. That seems like an extreme decision, but after you've spent a show running from killer robots, you might want a break from technology, too. Anyway, there's probably no way to make a sequel to that, but Moore does think that making a season that fits between other seasons could be fun.

As it happens, Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail is currently working on another revival of Battlestar Galactica, to run on Peacock. "The focus is the same, which is the fear of tech and how it might take over, but this idea of just ‘the robots are going to be our overlords’ is a very facile and overly simplistic way of looking at it," he said. "Now that the audience is more sophisticated about the consequences, I think we have to match that with Battlestar.”

There's no word on when this version of Battlestar Galactica might go into production, but it could be fun to have a new version of this man-vs-machine story for the age of generative AI.
