Yesterday, fantasy author Brandon Sanderson announced that he had finished writing Wind and Truth, the upcoming fifth book in his massive Stormlight Archive series. "Tomorrow morning, I'll hand it off to the proofreading and copyediting team," he wrote. "491k words. The first file I have in my folder for this was dated March 2021, though active writing started about a year after that. So two years and a few months spent working on this full time, with another year of working on the outline. Feeling great about this final version! See you all December 6th. The book, finally, is DONE."
The Stormlight Archive is set on the planet of Roshar and revolves around an order of magical knights called the Knights Radiant. Wind and Truth is the fifth book in the sequence; the first, The Way of Kings, came out in 2010, so Sanderson has been working on this series for a while.
Wind and Truth is also going to be the end to this leg of the Stormlight series, so expect some climactic events. After that, Sanderson has plans to write more books in his Mistborn series before embarking the second half of The Stormlight Archive.
Wind and Truth is scheduled to come out on December 7, 2024. Sanderson has distinguished himself as an author who can turn books around pretty quickly, setting himself apart from writers like George R.R. Martin and Patrick Rothfuss, who take forever to finish new books. I think it's only a matter of time before Hollywood comes knocking and adapts one or another of Sanderson's work for the screen, so this may be a good time to dive into his work if you've been on the fence. The Mistborn series is usually considered a good place to start:
