Check out these 2 Game of Thrones wargames, one based on the show and another on the books
By Dan Selcke
When it rains Game of Thrones miniature wargames, it pours Game of Thrones miniature wargames. Two new ones are coming in quick succession, one based on George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books and another on HBO's iconic TV adaptation.
We know more about A Song of Ice and Fire: Tactics, a game from Cool Mini or Not, which we'll abbreviate as CMON. CMON already makes A Song of Ice and Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game, the miniatures from which can be integrated into A Song of Ice and Fire: Tactics. According to Wargamer, the game itself is a "strategic skirmish wargame" with a grid-based movement system and cardboard terrain tiles where players take control of either charactes from Martin's books or normal foot soldiers to stage famous battles from throughout Westerosi history, or make up their own!
The starter box for the game is called "The Battle of the Trident," and features heroes like Robert Baratheron and Rhaegar Targaryen. Apparently the motivations of hero characters like that will have a big influence on gameplay, although if you just want to ignore that and just mash the miniatures together while making sword noises I don't think anyone's going to stop you.
CMON has started a crowdfunding campaign for A Song of Ice and Fire: Tactics; check it out here! It's already blown past its goal with several days to go. The promotional video they put up has me seriously considering buying this:
Yes, that is a huge Drogon figuring wrapped around that tower. According to Wargamer, Drogon will feature in "a special scenario" where he's "utterly unkillable." But again, once you have your hands on this, you're free to do whatever you want.
Two epic-looking Game of Thrones miniature wargames are coming
The other tabletop game is the Game of Thrones Miniature Game from Knight Models. It's supposed to come out sooner, but we know less about it. Prepare for a thrilling journey into the heart of Westeros. "Engage in epic battles and unravel political intrigues as the Great Houses of Westeros vie for power, all through meticulously crafted miniatures of your beloved Game of Thrones characters," reads the Knight Models website.
Knight Models specializes in games with highly detailed models. On January 30, they said that the Game of Thrones Miniatures Game would be out "in just a few days."
All of this is happening ahead of the release of House of the Dragon this summer, which may well inspire a battle scenario or two. When it rains, it wars.
