Corlys Velaryon officially becomes Rhaenyra's Hand of the Queen in House of the Dragon season 2

A brief shot from the new trailers for House of the Dragon season 2 confirms that Corlys Velaryon will become Hand of the Queen to Rhaenyra Targaryen, just like in the source book.

The second season of House of the Dragon will premiere on June 16 on HBO and Max. The network recently released a pair of trailers showing off what to expect:

When last we left our leads, Rhaenyra Targaryen was on the verge of all-out war with her half-brother Aegon II Targaryen, who is currently sitting the Iron Throne that she was promised since she was young. Rhaenyra needs to marshal every resource available to her if she wants to come out of this conflict on top.

That means keeping her allies close, including Corlys Velaryon, the richest lord in Westeros and the commander of an enormous fleet of ships. Corlys is inclined to support Rhaenyra in this war, since she's the mother to his grandsons (kind of) and his wife Rhaenys Velaryon is on her side. In author Goerge R.R. Martin's book Fire & Blood, Rhaenyra names Corlys as her Hand of the Queen, which basically makes him her top advisor. That's a canny move; you don't want a man that powerful as your enemy, so best make him your friend.

Rhaenyra hadn't yet named Corlys her Hand of the Queen by the end of House of the Dragon season 1, but in the new trailers for season 2, there's a brief shot of Corlys wearing a Hand of the Queen pin on his coat. This is the same pin worn by various Hands of the King and Queen whom we met on Game of Thrones, including Ned Stark, Tyrion Lannister, Tywin Lannister, and Qyburn.
