Russell T. Davies' rebooted Doctor Who series kicks off later this month. The new season is being marketed as 'season one' on Disney+, as the franchise enters a new era with Ncuti Gatwa as the lead character. Plus, Disnsy is now involved in the Whoniverse, which means the new season has got a budget higher than anything the franchise has had before.

In the new season of Doctor Who, the adventures throughout space and time will look better than ever. The Doctor and his companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) fight aliens, explore the distant past, meet The Beatles in Abbey Road studios and more. It's gonna be epic!

With the show getting a budget more akin to what other big-name sci-fi and fantasy shows get nowadays, showrunner Russell T. Davies has made sure the cash injection has gone to good use. For instance, he's green-lit an idea for an episode that he and former showrunner Steven Moffat had way over a decade ago, back when the BBC's budget couldn't justify making it. This idea is covered in Episode 5 of the new series, titled "Dot and Bubble."

"Episode 5… I remember talking to Steven Moffat about that in around about 2010. We couldn’t have afforded it. It was just a vague idea, ‘Oh, you can do this and that’ and it just didn’t go any further. We needed the money," Davies told SFX Magazine. "Once you see episode 5 you’ll go, ‘I get what you mean.’"

Davies also said that there are aspects of the season's two-part finale that have been brewing in his mind for half a century. "There's stuff in the finale that I must have been thinking of for 40 or 50 years," he revealed. The finale will clarify the backstory of Ruby Sunday, who was left at a church one Christmas as a baby.

Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson name their favorite episodes in new Doctor Who season

The new season consists of eight episodes, less than other seasons, but they'll pack a punch. There's one episode, "Rogue," that stands out. The Regency-era tale features Jonathan Groff, outrageously good costumes, and plenty of surprises.

Gibson rhapsodized about the episode. "We had Jonathan Groff in it, for God's sake! It was incredible. Just so many things happen in that episode. It's filled with so much," she said. "It's like what best friends would do – they'd travel to the Regency era and then be like, 'I'm gonna go find a scandal!' That was my favourite episode, for sure."

Gatwa agreed with her choice. "It captured the cheekiness... they both go off and have these separate scandals, which was a lot of fun!" But there is one slight caveat: Gatwa and Gibson don't share much screentime in it. "We didn't film together that much. We're on separate strands."
