The Whoniverse is back and it's bigger and more ambitious than ever before. Following the farewell of David Tennant's Fourteenth Doctor, the Doctor Who franchise has undertaken a soft reboot under the direction of showrunner Russell T. Davies, providing the ideal jumping-on point for new viewers.
The series now has the immense financial backing of Disney, meaning more opportunities to tell grander and more epic stories that would otherwise have been infeasible. So far, the opening episodes have been a mixed bag. "Space Babies" was a fun and weird ride, "The Devil's Chord" was bonkers, "Boom" was fantastic, and "73 Yards" was undoubtedly the standout episode of the new season so far.
Despite uneven reviews, Disney and the BBC are investing mightily into the rebooted series. Both Ncuti Gatwa (the Doctor) and Millie Gibson (Ruby Sunday) have shown flashes of brilliance. Ruby Sunday has a captivating larger story regarding the mystery of her parentage. We'll learn more about her backstory in Episode 7, "The Legend of Ruby Sunday," and her story will continue into season 2.
Speaking of season 2, Russell T. Davies recently confirmed that production on the next batch of episodes is complete. Davies confirmed the news on his Instagram page, where he shared a photo of himself with Michelle Greenidge, who plays Ruby's adoptive mother Carla Sunday, at the wrap party. "Wrap party with @miche_greenidge and a beautiful Cardiff Bay. That’s Season 2 complete, well done everyone!" he wrote.
Currently, we know that Doctor Who season 2 will introduce a new companion in the form of Varada Sethu. We already met Sethu's character, Mundy Flynn, on the planet Kastarion 3 in "Boom." We don't have any further details, but we know that Millie Gibson will also stick around for season 2, meaning the Doctor will have two companions.
New episodes of Doctor Who drop on Fridays on Disney+. There's only four episodes to go this season, folks!
