Ewan McGregor is "sure" he'll play Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars again
By Ashley Hurst
In the Disney era of Star Wars, Ewan McGregor has already reprised his beloved role as Obi-Wan Kenobi for his own series — and he's certain more appearances are inevitable. McGregor has been a popular figure in the franchise over 20 years now, beginning his journey with The Phantom Menace (1999).
Naturally, thanks to those Disney NDA's, McGregor has previously had to play it coy about returning. But now, however, he's open about his enthusiasm for making future appearances in the franchise. “The truth is I’ve talked about having to cover for doing the Obi-Wan season for years, I had to lie about that, and I’m not lying about this now,” he told LadBible. “I don’t know."
His one and only subsequent appearance following the prequel movies was in Obi-Wan Kenobi, a 6-episode limited series set 10 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith. The series was a big success, also seeing Hayden Christensen return as Anakin Skywalker. The nostalgia hit was real.
Despite the success of Obi-Wan Kenobi, McGregor insists that it was only meant as a limited series, and no follow-ups are being discussed yet. "There’s been no phone call to me from Lucasfilm, or Disney saying, ‘Let’s do another one’. Obi-Wan was made as a limited series and it’s out and people like it, which I’m very, very pleased about,” he explained.
With all of that said, however, he remains keen to return to the galaxy far, far away in some capacity. “I hope we get a chance to do another one and I’m sure we will," he added. "I’m pretty sure, you know, I’ve got a few years yet before I’m the same age as Alec Guinness was in A New Hope. So there’s time to tell more stories in there.”
Who knows what's in store for the future? I'm sure fans would welcome further appearances from Ewan McGregor. Now it's time for the writers to squeeze him in somewhere. In the meantime, all six episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi are now streaming on Disney+!
