Exactly how old is Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings: The Ring of Power?

Galadriel is around 2,425 years old during the events of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, although it's impossible to determine exactly because the show collapses a lot of events from J.R.R. Tolkien's timeline.

In J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, elves are immortal. That includes Galadriel, the elven lady played by Cate Blanchett in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movie trilogy and by Morfydd Clark in Prime Video's prequel series The Rings of Power.

The Rings of Power is set during the Second Age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before the likes of Frodo, Bilbo, Aragorn and most of that crew are born. Tolkien provided a pretty exact timeline of Middle-earth; we know exactly when major events happen during the Second Age, However, The Rings of Power collapses many of these events in a way that makes things fuzzier. For instance, right now, on the show, Sauron and Celebrimbor are forging the rings of power, which happens around the year 1500 in Tolkien's timeilne. Meanwhile, on the island nation of Númenor, Ar-Pharazôn has seized the throne, even though he won't even be born until the year 3177, according to Tolkien's accounting.

Since the timeline is unclear on the show, it's hard to determined exactly how old Galadriel is. However, we can give it our best shot. Let's see if we can puzzle it out:

  • Galadriel is born in the year 1362 during the Age of the Trees, before the sun and moon had risen in the sky. The Age of the Trees ends in the year 1500, when the giant spider Ungoliant destroys the Two Trees of Valinor with the help of Melkor, who will thereafter be known as Morgoth, the first dark lord of Middle-earth. Galadriel is around 138 years old at this point.
  • After this, the yearly calendar resets to 0 as the First Age of Middle-earth begins. Galadriel leaves Valinor along with many other Ñoldor elves to travel to Middle-earth and fight Morgoth. She lives through the entire First Age, which ends with Morgoth's defeat and lasts 590 years. She's 728 years old at that point.
  • The calendar resets again for the Second Age of Middle-earth, when Morgoth's lieutenant Sauron tries to establish himself as a new dark lord. Again, the timeline of the show is much collapsed compared to Tolkien's timeline, but we can still pinpoint some major events. Right now, the show is about to adapt the siege of Eregion, which happens around the year 1697. That makes Galadriel around 2,425 years old.

So there you have it: Galadriel is around 2,425 years old on The Rings of Power. Ah, youth.
