Everyone was shocked when Netflix announced that Henry Cavill would be leaving The Witcher, where he plays the lead role of Geralt of Rivia. We still don't know exactly what happened behind the scenes, but we know that when the show returns for season 4, The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth will be wearing Geralt's signature white wig, battling monsters and looking for his surrogate daughter Ciri.
We've caught glimpses of Hemsworth done up as Geralt on set, but now, Entertainment Weekly has released the first official image of him in costume, with proper lighting and everything:
If you are dead set against anyone replacing Cavill, I doubt this photo will convince you of anything. But I think he looks pretty good. I can picture that Geralt growling out expletives while he beheads a striga. For comparison's sake, here's Henry Cavill's Geralt in a similar photo:
Shadows, strong jaws, tousled wig...I think this could work. There's also a video of Hemsworth you can watch up top.
Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich talked about getting Hemsworth to this point. "His look has been in development for over a year, so it’s thrilling to finally share an official sneak peek of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia. Cast and crew alike have been struck by the passion, energy, and embodiment Liam has brought to the character from Day 1 — scruffy beard, iconic scar, and all! We’re having so much fun filming season 4 and are excited to welcome fans along on this journey with us."
Hemsworth himself weighed in on the switch a while back: “As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honored that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”
Hemsworth has a big job ahead of him trying to convince fans that he's a good replacement for Cavill, the internet's favorite nerd daddy. A lot people will hate his performance on principle. But who knows? If the fourth and fifth seasons of the show end the series in a satisfying way, maybe people will come around. We'll get a better idea when The Witcher season 4 drops on Netflix sometime next year.
