First look at House of the Dragon star Freddie Fox as Loki in The Sandman season 2

The second season of The Sandman will introduce a lot of new deities, including Freddie Fox as Loki and Laurence O'Fuarain as Thor.

At long last, we got our first look at the second season of The Sandman during Netflix's Geeked Week. The show will continue to adapt Neil Gaiman's seminal fantasy comic about Dream and his band of eternal siblings, each of which represents a different as aspect of the human condition. Dream is the lord of dreams, which puts him in contact with all sorts of characters from myth and legend. The second season will adapt a story from the comics where a bunch of them travel to Dream's realm to attend to a matter of succession, which means Egyptian gods mingle with Norse gods mingle with freaky demons. It should be a good time.

We got a glimpse of some of these newcomers in a behind-the-scenes video. I want to draw attention to a couple of people in particular, since they're veterans of the Game of Thrones universe and we like that kind of thing around here. First up is Freddie Fox, who you may remember as Alicent Hightower's priggish brother Gwayne on House of the Dragon, as the Norse trickster god Loki, seen here looking up to something devious:

Modern audiences have become familiar with Loki thanks to Tom Hiddleston's portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he has a long history before that. Also present will be Loki's brother Thor, played in The Sandman by Lauence O'Fuarain:

And then there's Loki and Thor's father Odin, the chief of the Norse pantheon, played by Clive Russell. You might remember him as Brynden "Blackfish" Tully from Game of Thrones.

There's no release date for The Sandman season 2 as of yet, but I'm glad to see Netflix beginning to roll out the red carpet. I'm also happy to hear the cast and crew refer to it as "season 2," since they've been a little cagey about calling it that in the past. There are rumors that this new season will skip right to the end of Gaiman's comic, but I hope that's not true, since there's a lot of juicy material in there I'd love to see explored over the course of several seasons. You'll learn more as we learn more.
