One of the fun things about Game of Thrones and its successor show House of the Dragon is the sense of getting swept up in the swift current of history. Every conflict has roots in things that happened generations ago, and every character has a family legacy that still affects them today.

With no house is that so clear as the Targaryens. When we meet Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones, her family has been deposed and she's living in exile with her brother across the Narrow Sea from Westeros. But at one time, the Targaryens ruled Westeros with unquestioned authority. We're getting a good look at that on House of the Dragon. And before that, the first Targaryens rulers -- Aegon Targaryen and his sisters Rhaenys and Visenya -- invaded Westeros from Dragonstone. And they have ancestors, too; who knows if HBO will ever make a show exploring all of that background?

But generally, Aegon and his sisters are considered to be the progenitors of the Targrayen dynasty as we know it. Over on Reddit, user Juniperljoy has put together a really cool family tree tracing the Targaryen bloodline from Aegon and his sisters through the cast of House of the Dragon and all the way down to Daenerys Targaryen and her surprise nephew Jon Snow. You can see a huge blown up version of the picture here; just click on it.

Fair warning: looking too close at some of the entries may spoil things on House of the Dragon. You'll see how when the show returns on HBO and Max this summer.
